Fifth Annual Juanita Lake Fishing Derby in which 92 children, ages 15 and younger, participated was held on Saturday, June 15.

After registration and raffle entry at 8:30 a.m., fishing lasted until 11:30 a.m. Dorris Volunteer Firefighters, U.S. Forest Service Goosenest Firefighters, Butte Valley Firefighters and CalFire Firefighters were on hand and monitored the activities around the lake. Many adults took advantage of the 1.1 mile paved walking path around the lake.

A free lunch was served at noon with hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, pop, water and cupcakes. During lunch, Smokey Bear arrived and provided photo opportunities as he mingled with the kids and adults. During and after lunch, prizes were handed out. This year’s grand prize winners were Granger Smith (heaviest fish at 4 lbs.), Ray Olsen (longest fish at 15 inches) and Bently Hansen (most fish). About 30 additional donated items were awarded as raffle prizes.

A huge thank you to the sponsors: Butte Valley Chamber of Commerce, Butte Valley Fire Protection District, Dorris Volunteer Fire Department, Macdoel Firebelles, U.S. Forest Service and California Fish and Wildlife.

There were many donations and contributions from the area, including those from Planasa Nursery, NorCal Nursery , Tom Craddock, Cedar Pointe Nursery, Cal Ore Telephone, Pepsi-Cola, Gene and Nikki Lane, Prather Ranch, A Slice of Heaven, Cash & Carry, Merrill Lumber, Lassen Canyon Store. A big thanks goes to all of them.
