Fifth Annual Juanita Lake Fishing Derby in which 92 children, ages 15 and younger, participated was held on Saturday, June 15.
After registration and raffle entry at 8:30 a.m., fishing lasted until 11:30 a.m. Dorris Volunteer Firefighters, U.S. Forest Service Goosenest Firefighters, Butte Valley Firefighters and CalFire Firefighters were on hand and monitored the activities around the lake. Many adults took advantage of the 1.1 mile paved walking path around the lake.
A free lunch was served at noon with hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, pop, water and cupcakes. During lunch, Smokey Bear arrived and provided photo opportunities as he mingled with the kids and adults. During and after lunch, prizes were handed out. This year’s grand prize winners were Granger Smith (heaviest fish at 4 lbs.), Ray Olsen (longest fish at 15 inches) and Bently Hansen (most fish). About 30 additional donated items were awarded as raffle prizes.
