Oakridge mayor resigns months before end of term

Oakridge Mayor Jim Coey has resigned rather than face a possible recall effort.

Coey told The Register-Guard in a phone interview Monday that “life’s too short” to deal with what’s going on.

Two Oakridge residents who sit on the city’s planning commission began gathering signatures earlier this year to recall Coey. They said he had held a private meeting with two other councilors to ask City Administrator Louis Gomez to resign, potentially in violation of Oregon’s public meetings law for elected officials.

Three Dutch workers killed in Oregon car crash

Three employees of a Dutch technology company died from injuries they sustained in a car crash in Oregon.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that 25-year-old Ronald Wall and 22-year-old Jamie Shennan died in a hospital over the weekend. A third employee, 37-year-old Timotheus Albers, died at the scene of Thursday’s crash north of Salem.

Investigators said Wall and his two passengers were stopped behind a driver making a left turn. A pickup struck Wall’s car from behind, causing Wall to crash into the car in front of him.

The men worked for ASML and had been in the U.S. for less than a week.

Portland’s aerial tram closing for maintenance

Portland’s aerial tram will be closed for maintenance later this summer.

The popular tourist attraction will be shut down from June 23 through July 30.

The tram opened in 2006. It undergoes periodic maintenance throughout the year, but this will be the longest closure in its history.

In addition to being a tourist draw, the tram is a key transportation link for thousands of Oregon Health & Science University employees, students and staff.

OHSU will run shuttle buses between the South Waterfront and the campus between 5:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on weekdays.
