His family later moved to San Leandro, CA where Don attended grade school and high school. Following high school, Don spent four years at the University of California at Davis and graduated with a degree in Animal Science in 1951. He was married to his wife, Jackie Hagglund, for more than 60 years. Don was preceded in death by his wife Jackie, daughter Susan and son-in law Bob Keady. Don's education and interest in the cattle and horse business allowed him many exciting and challenging employment opportunities over his career. Immediately after his graduation from UC Davis, Don was the assistant to the President of Tejon Ranch Company, one of the oldest and largest ranches in the country. Following Tejon Ranch, he started his own cattle and farming business in Bakersfield, CA and within 10 years sold the business. From there he spent a few years in the Thoroughbred horse racing business at Flag is up Farms in Solvang, CA. Wanting to get back into the cattle business, in 1971 Don moved his family to Salmon, Idaho and became the General Manager of Pine Creek Ranches, Inc an historical Registered Hereford cattle operation. He ended his career as the General Manager for Running Y Ranch in Klamath Falls, Oregon, for two ownerships, the Disney Family and JELD-WEN. During his retirement years, Don continued to breed cattle, raise horses, and donate his time to many agricultural related organizations. Don's true passion, besides his family, were Quarter Horses. He bred, raised, and raced Quarter Horses for many years. One of his greatest achievements was qualifying and racing a horse in the prestigious All-American Futurity in 1966. His love for racing continued through his career with many wins at Los Alamitos, Bay Meadows, and other tracks. Don was generous with his time and was involved with many organizations including the Klamath Bull & Horse Sale, Oregon Water Board, Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Association and Oregon Cattlemen's Association.
