Comic books, video games, cosplay, special guest speakers and nerdy fun abounds at the upcoming Medford Comic Con, but to execute grandiose plans of entertainment for Southern Oregon volunteers are being sought to make the event possible.
Scheduled for Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Medford Comic Con is one of Oregon’s largest annual comic con events – drawing thousands of people to the Medford Library every year. Entering its fifth year, coordinators are expanding offerings larger than ever before this year – and in doing so are seeking intrepid volunteers passionate about fun community events to take part.
Created by the Jackson County Library Services staff, and inspired by the ever-popular Comic Con event established by the Klamath County Library District, the initial 2015 event drew over 2,000 people. Since then it has grown exponentially, last year tallying over 20,000 visitors across two days alongside over 70 vendors and 30 workshops and panels.
That growth has led to more offerings than what library staff can directly handle. Additions to this year’s event include a “Video Game Time Vortex,” — a space dedicated to the history of video games with over 30 playable gaming consoles from the earliest days of Pong in the 1970s to present-day systems. There will also be a costume contest, fan art competition, a variety of guest speakers and panel discussions, and much more.
Training sessions for interested volunteers will take place on Tuesday, March 26 at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m., and Monday, April 15 at 5:30 p.m. Those interested in volunteering for the 2019 Medford Comic Con should contact the Medford Library at 541-774-8689 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
