A recall election will be June 3 with proponents seeking to remove Tulelake Mayor Randy Darrow from office.
The petition charges Darrow with: Failure to follow the Brown Act, which provides for public meetings; failure to protect city residents from conflict of interest for legal representation; failure to follow city procedures for hiring and dismissal of city employees.
Recall proponents include Sue Baley, Roberta Casad, Geraldine Crowell, Joseph Mauch, Trudy Eastman, Iva Rogers, Teresa Lynne Williams, Tyler David Williams and Doris Bateman.
Siskiyou County Clerk Colleen Setzer said recall supporters submitted petitions with 101 signatures. Office staff stopped counting after checking 87 signatures, when they reached the required number of 74 registered voters. Thirteen signatures were disallowed.
Setzer said people have until March 7 to file if they wish to be candidates for the possible vacancy. If the recall votes fails, no votes will be counted. If successful, the candidate with the most votes will take office. Candidacy forms are available at the Tulelake City Hall but they must be filed at the county courthouse in Yreka.
Darrow had no comment but said he would answer the claims in detail.
During the Tulelake City Council’s Tuesday night meeting, the council passed a resolution calling for the recall election but all council members said they oppose the recall.
During Tuesday night’s Tulelake City Council meeting, the council reviewed and approved a contract with Rocky Mountain Construction to do overlays on various segments of city streets. Depending on weather, work could begin in April or May. Total cost for the project is estimated between $500,000 and $600,000 and is being funded by the California State Transportation Improvement Program.
In other matters, the council heard a presentation from Bear Technologies on a possible new telephone system but took no action.
council meeting time
The Alturas City Council, which for several years has been meeting at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month, will shift meeting times to
2 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month beginning April 15.
In approving the switch during the council’s meeting last week, it was noted the change will save money on overtime for some city staff. The city hall meeting room is used Tuesdays for Modoc County Supervisors board meetings, which prompted the change to the third Tuesday. City officials said public attendance at the evening meetings is usually extremely light.
In other matters, the council was told by Dee Funk that efforts are being initiated to plan and develop a certified skateboard park. Funk said planning is in the early stages.
Chiloquin VIP fundraiser
Chiloquin Visions in Progress, a group that’s been involved in a wide range of Chiloquin area improvement projects, will host a fundraising dinner 5 p.m. Saturday,
March 1, at the Chiloquin Community Center. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. and feature a large baked potato with chili con carne and toppings, or a large baked potato with broccoli and cheese with a green salad. There also will be beverages and homemade pudding parfait. The cost is $8 for adults, or $6 for children 11 and younger.
Bingo will start at 6 and last until about 9 p.m. Game books are $10 each and each has 10 games. Daubers will be available to buy for $1 each.
Drought warning signs
Caltrans, the California Department of Transportation, has launched a statewide educational campaign urging travelers to conserve water. Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty said the agency is supporting the saveourh20.org campaign by using changeable message signs along highways to raise awareness of the severe drought and urge people to conserve water.
It also was announced Caltrans is reducing statewide irrigation activities by at least 50 percent on its 30,000 acres of landscaping, delaying all new landscaping projects in severely impacted areas, postponing all nonessential highway planting, ceasing watering in areas suffering from the most severe drought impact, expanding use of smart irrigation technologies, using recycled water whenever possible and forgoing washing vehicles except when necessary for safety.
Modoc travel meeting
The next meeting in an ongoing series of public discussions on the Modoc National Forests Travel Management Process will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27 at Cafe 22 in Cedarville. The meetings are intended to be used in forming future decisions for the designation of Forest roads. The public is asked to review the road system and “help recommend opportunities that lead to a safe, affordable and environmentally sustainable road system,” according to Modoc officials.
