Twenty people were arrested early Wednesday morning as local law enforcement targeted drug activity in the Klamath Falls area.

Fourteen locations across the city and its suburbs were targeted, leading to drug charges as well as charges related to theft, weapons, and probation and parole violations. Authorities said the event was the culmination of months of work and investigation.

“The drug problem was rearing its head again,” said Klamath County District Attorney Ed Caleb.

Forty-seven individuals from the Klamath Falls Police Department, Klamath County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon Department of Justice participated in the event, with Klamath County Community Corrections and Klamath County Fire District No. 1 lending support, according to a KFPD press release.

Caleb and KFPD Detective Mike Anderson said the effort started with a joint meeting between agencies. Caleb said undercover agents began buying drugs a month ago in order to receive search warrants.

Variety of charges

Most of those arrested were charged with crimes related to manufacture of methamphetamine, though some were also charged with marijuana and prescription drug crimes.

Anderson said authorities executed all the search warrants they had planned and without having to use any weapons, although the Oregon State Police bomb squad out of Central Point did have to take care of two suspected destructive devices found at one location that was searched.

“We’re still working with the bomb squad to determine what they were,” he said.

More arrests could be made in coming days. Caleb said that while some of those arrested will be able to post bail or be released on their own recognizance, the charges will be prosecuted.

“The great thing about the whole thing is Oregon Department of Justice is furnishing an attorney to prosecute these cases,” he said.
