Tomorrow's potato varieties
Brian Charlton, cropping system specialist with the Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center, displays a variety of russets almost ready for commercial production. The extension center now develops potato varieties that will be used throughout the Pacific Northwest.
- Bringing home gold
At its annual meeting in January, the Oregon Potato Commission gave out four gold medals for the best potato varieties grown in the state. Three went to Klamath Basin producers.
Dan Chin, of Chin Farms, won for specialty potatoes with his organic Klamath pearl and for red potatoes with a French red fingerling.
The Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center won with a yellow potato variety, one that was developed in the Tri-State Potato Variety Development Program. The program was moved to the local extension center last year.
The potato commission partnered with the American Culinary Federation’s Chefs de Cuisine to conduct the taste test of the potato varieties.
