I would like to take this opportunity to correct some potential public misperceptions about Pelican Elementary School.

Recently, I noticed a comment in the Herald and News about Pelican’s low performance on the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills statewide math and reading assessments.

The truth is that Pelican has performed very well on the statewide math and reading assessments over the past few years.

Last year, each of our assessed grade levels, third through sixth grades, performed at or above the state average and well above the district averages.

On the new school report card rating system, Pelican ranked as the highest scoring school in the entire county.

Over the past several years Pelican has been one of the top performing schools in all of Klamath, and it is due to considerable effort from Pelican’s teachers, parents and students.

To say otherwise is disrespecting all the incredibly hard work the Pelican community has put into the quality of education we provide our students. If you have any questions about the quality of instruction Pelican provides, or to get more specifics on how our children performed on the OAKS assessment, please do not hesitate to call 541-883-4765.

Pelican Principal
