OSP reports fatal crashes up during New Year's holiday

DUII arrests down

Monday, January 5, 2009 11:23 AM PST
According to preliminary reports from the Oregon State Police, there were more fatalities on Oregon roads during the New Year’s holiday weekend than in 2007-08. OSP gathered statistics from Dec. 31, 2008 to Jan. 4, 2009 and found seven people died in five separate traffic crashes during that period.

Slick roadway conditions are said to be a contributing factor in four of the five crashes. Driver impairment is noted as a contributing factor in one of the crashes.

The fatal traffic crashes include:

Jan. 1, approximately 9:32 p.m., a 27-year-old Bend man died in a single vehicle crash  on Northeast Purcell and Highway 20. Driver impairment is a noted factor.

Jan. 2, approximately 7:35 a.m., a 16-year-old Redmond girl died in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 97 north of Bend near milepost 127.

Jan. 2, approximately 1 p.m., a 31-year-old Salem man died in a two-vehicle crash on Silverton Road near 64th Place.

Jan. 2, approximately 8:42 p.m., three females ages 24, 16 and 13 from the Parkdale area died in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 35 south of Hood River near milepost 100.

Jan. 3, approximately 2:49 p.m., one person died in a four-vehicle crash on Highway 38 east of Scottsburg near milepost 20. The victim has not yet been positively identified.

All crashes remain under investigation by state and local police.

There were 85 driving under the influence of intoxicants arrests made during the 102-hour period. This is down from the 2007-08 holiday period where 98 DUII arrests were made. The greatest number of arrests were made in the Portland and Springfield areas.
