County appoints 5 attorneys to review tourism bids

Friday, December 19, 2008 4:22 PM PST
Three of five attorneys appointed to a Klamath County tourism review committee reside outside the county, but all practice law or have other roles within the Klamath Basin community.

Commissioners Al Switzer and John Elliott approved the appointments Friday morning. County counsel Dan Bunch provided the list of candidates after vetting them for potential conflicts of interest. Committee members are expected to score four tourism proposals submitted to the county by 10 a.m. Dec. 30, after which Bunch and Bonnie Grant, county contract specialist, will calculate scores and announce a contract winner. " I'm sure greatful that we live in a County free from corruption. I heard about one county where two commissioners got together beforehand to agree upon a score of a tourism contract, just so it wouldn't go to one of there rivals. I'm sure glad that wasn't us.

I also heard about this one county where there commissioners were given a 4 year warning about the loss of timber funds. Plenty of time for them to come up with an alternative plan, instead they didn't plan and had to lay off a whole bunch of employees. I'm sure glad that wasn't us.

Oh it is so great to live in Utopia where we worship our county commissioners because they never do anything wrong. I just wish the rest of the world was like us. "

We can even sing songs like "We are the World" and Kumbiya. I think it is a great idea to pretend nothing is going on. We have been doing it for how many years now?

Ok, well, I'm going to go now and hug a tree somewhere. It will make me feel much better. Bye.... "

It will be interesting to see how the scores come out this week, but I sure hope they score the highest.

This will be a very positive move for our community to begin the new year with this group promoting us. "

Let's look to the good we all can do! If that county employee had evidence of wrong doing, then why doesn't he or she do something about it? Maybe they have only seen or heard one side? There are always two sides to every issue. I think this person should be brave enough to go to John or Al and talk it out. I would. "

" Thank you to "Its Obvious." I will no longer answer those hateful and derogatory bloggers. I agree with you that Klamath County is full of good people with good advice and helpful thoughts to make our County an even better place. You cannot reason with people who are so unwilling to leave the pass behind and work for a better tomorrow; who are so angry at losing their efforts at passing the charter. Let's really work hard to promote our wonderful community. And, please, let's all give the new Board of Commissioners a chance to work together for the benefit of Klamath County!!! I am!!!! "

JimmyH wrote on Dec 27, 2008 4:45 PM:

" To aid in your conspiracy theory, this is my second post, I sure hope that this doesn't spoil your 2 or 3 people theory.

I do want to point out a couple of things. You said "we" lost our takeover attempt. To make it clear to you, I voted no on the Charter. Not because ridding ourselves of these two would make Klamath County better, the way the charter was written, would not have been any better.

You are right though, I do not like the commissioners, and I never will. There dishonesty, illegal activities, failing to provide proper funding to county agencies, and failing to protect the people of Klamath County are the reasons. The illegal awarding of the tourism contract was the straw that broke the camels back. I personally don't care who gets it, just do it honestly.

You ask that I identify who I am. Well, I don't see any Mr or Mrs "It's Obvious" in the phone book. If you agree with this immoral activity, why don't you identify yourself? I will tell you why with me.

I am a county employee, no I'm not any of the ones that worked on the Charter. I already told you my vote. I have seen how these two seek revenge if you talk against them. I do work for an agency that has a department head. This agency will be hurt if they knew who was speaking the TRUTH about them. They seek revenge and will not let it go. If you think Bill Brown was a hothead, you haven't seen anything with Al and John when you cross them. Bill Brown would be an angel next to them.

I have seen first hand the mismanagement of this office as well as the funding this county gets. The good ol boy system is alive and well in Klamath County, and nothing will ever be done about it. They have the wool pulled over most everybodies eyes as evident in these posts that support these two.

If you only knew the truth and what goes on, indictments would be issued, and both could and should be prosecuted for official misconduct. Nobody here will listen, or take on the nobel task of prosecuting.

I as well as most everybody here love Klamath County. I will not let these two run me out. If I felt it was not worth fighting for, I would say nothing.

Klamath County, it's time to wake up and see how bad this county is, and that Al and John are the only ones to blame. "

" The very negative comments are coming from the same 2 or 3 people.

They do not like the Commissioners, and never will.

If all your accusations are true, identify who you are, rather than tossing out harmful stuff anonymously.

If you have the proof, bring forward formal charges.

I have tried to reason with these 2 or 3 people tirelessly, and have not been successful. I have concluded that they cannot be reasoned with, and I will no longer try. They will sacrifice the public perception to exact their revenge on the Commissioners, regardless of how the community feels.

They lost their takeover attempt (the charter) in resounding fashion. They will not listen to anyone, including the overwhelming majority of voters.

I personally, will change my focus away from attempting to reason with unreasonable people, and focus on dealing with the healthier part of our community that wants to effect change in a positive way.

I will no longer deal with these very negative folks that define positive change by tallying the total number of people they dislike, and destroy. For they have proven that they do not desire to build coalitions for the good of our community, rather, they will build coalitions of likeminded people that will destroy anyone they don't like, as well as anyone that likes who they don't like.

Their time must come to an end, and they best way to usher in this end, is to no longer acknowledge their irrational thinking.

So I commit to all you fellow commentators, that I will ignore their spewing from this point forward, and will only post comments that I believe will make Klamath shine. Their negative comments will not receive retort from me any longer.

Klamath is a great community full of great people. Working hard together, we will lift us up from this hardship we are in, and we will move into the future in a cohesive, positive manner.

Cheers to all! "

" That is some good advise, maybe you should pass this on to our Commissioners too.

Do unto others, do you mean like not preparing for loss of funds and having to lay off dozens of people. Perhaps they should lay themselves off.

Do unto others, do you mean like illegally awarding contracts. Perhaps they should not do that either.

Do unto others, like give themselves raises, and make the rest of the county employees take wage freezes.

Do unto others, do yo mean like saying they want law enforecement to be there priority, but yet devastate the Sheriff's Office by failing to provide them money?

Seems like out Commissioners need to follow your advise and read the good Book themselves. "

The Good Book (the Bible) says to do unto others as you would want them done unto you. Looking for the good in others instead of always the negative, makes life worth living. I really do feel pity for this person. I, too, will pray for them. Sounds like this person did not get their own way, so they attack others because they are hurt and disappointed. "

These two have been awarding contracts for how many years now. All of a sudden, ooops sorry guys, messed up here gotta do a do over.

All those that think these two walk on water all got there hand caught in the cookie jar this time. You right, it is hilarious reading these posts and actually think that these two commissioners do a good job. The inteligence level of these two are exhibited in the fabulous "christmas gift". This had all the makings of an adult conversation until then.

Over 50% of the voters of Klamath County feel that these people are doing a poor job and "change" is needed. Maybe Nobama could come here and clean us up.

How many more hundreds of thousands of dollars do these two need to cost us before we finally open our eyes. I think the Department of Justice would be very interested in investigating an official misconduct charge against these two. Pre-Planning on who will get a contract is unethical and illegal.

Recall, Revote or Charter, which ever comes first. "

It is time that everyone realize that we all learn new things if we are willing to be teachable. But, people like you want to always point out the faults about everyone else. When you point your finger at someone else, you have 3 pointing back at you. All I have to say is that I respect them for sharing with all of us what happened, how they were correcting it, and now lets chill out and allow the process to work. Get off your high horse and allow the rest of us to be people who are not perfect. "

" I am a resident of Bend Oregon and was thinking of coming down to stay at the Running Y. I would like to know if these comments are representative of the residents of your county. I thought because Klamath is smaller, the folks might be friendly, nice, down-home. However, some of these blogs are very mean-spirited.

As someone who travels a lot and arranges trips for others, I would like to put my two cents in....

KLAMATH is BEAUTIFUL! BUT!! Every place has beauty if you look. In fact dozens of places have mountains, rivers, lakes, good restaurants. What can make you stand out from the rest? Crater Lake you say?? Well, that's a good start and trust me, it's MAGNIFICENT. However, the one thing that makes someone come back or makes a trip/destination memorable is the quality of the PEOPLE that you meet.

Why should I visit Klamath Lake/Lake Euwana/Lake of the Woods/Rocky Point over Anthony Lakes, Wallowa Lake, Lake Billy Chinook, Yellowjacket? The reason is going to be because A - it's beautiful and B - the folks I met, talked to, heard from, etc. Again, it's the PEOPLE!!

If I'm looking to go on a road trip and I can choose between Medford, Roseburg, Klamath Falls, why would I pick one over the other? Those locations are all a bit different. So what's going to sway me? The PEOPLE!!

I could go on and on but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a ton of negative comments after this anyway from the people who just don't get it. And I dont care which organization you're with....many of you have seemed 'clique'ish', mean-spirited, and don't have a lot to say good about your county. I'd suggest you spend your time writing good things. Convince me why I should come

Last thing, if you think other potential visitors aren't reading these, open "GOOGLE" and do a search on Tourism Klamath County. As of this morning, these are coming up as number 3!!

(oh and on one of these tourism articles I saw someone complain about Californians, I'll just quash that and say I am a lifelong Oregon resident, have never lived any where else). "
