Medical offices start flu vaccine contest

Local physician wants to up the number of medical professionals who are vaccinated against influenza

Thursday, December 18, 2008 12:28 PM PST
Nationally, only about 60 percent of medical professionals are vaccinated against influenza, potentially putting patients at risk for contracting the disease. Dr. Jim Beggs, medical director for Cascade Comprehensive Care, hopes to raise that average for medical offices in Klamath Falls through a ‘Flu Shootout,’ which publicizes immunization rates of full-time employees participating medical offices. He plans to give $100 to the winning practice.

“You don’t get a flu shot primarily for your own protection,” Beggs said. “Everybody that gets it is going to pass it on to 20 more people. It’s very infectious.” So far, six clinics have submitted data. Three of them are at 100 percent. Sky Lakes Medical Center, Plum Ridge and the Klamath County Health Department also sent in their immunization rates.
