Updated: Tourism protest claims conflicts of interest
Document also cited as a conflict animosity toward Bill Brown
Posted 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10: Klamath County Commissioners John Elliott and Al Switzer had conflicts of interest in evaluating proposals for a new Klamath County tourism services contract, according to a protest document filed for tourism agency Travel Klamath. The protest, filed by a Medford law firm, said Elliott and Switzer’s advisory positions with Travel Klamath and the Klamath County Chamber of Commerce, respectively, created the conflicts. The two-page document also cited as a conflict potential animosity toward Commissioner Bill Brown, husband of Travel Klamath’s executive director.
Switzer said Tuesday he would try to address the protest this week.

That the renewal should be given to TK on the basis of having had it the past 3 years. That would be abuse of power on TK's half. I have a question to all those that think this thing was dishonest: Please tell me what the two commissioners said about this when you personally talked to them about this situation. " Did you look at the actual scoring sheets? This is public information. I believe you can look at a score sheet. There are 7 categories with mulitple questions under each category. If you would reread the Herald and News paper where the categories were scored, then there is no way you could come to your outlandish conclusion. " The major, major point here is that once again, for about the fifth time in the last few years, the Big 2 Commissioners have made a very ill advised [stupid!!] decision that will cost us taxpayers big bucks. Who do you think will pay the Commissioner's lawyer fees if they don't give-in and re-do the selection? And it will be in the tens of thousands of dollars potentially. They were clearly biased, clearly a conflict of interest was present. So why, oh why, didn't they give the decision to an independant review board. For those whining about a conflict of interest ... I know you all realize that EVERY county department has a BOCC liaison. For example, Al Switzer is the liaison to the museums. Should he be required to recuse himself from any decisions involving KLETI or the local RWIB? You'd better believe he didn't see a conflict of interest there, or in sitting on the TOC/OWA board, which will ultimately decide what happens as a result of KLETI's issues, and potentially could cost this county a lot of money. You might also be interested to know that until just a few months ago (don’t know exactly when), Bill Brown was sitting in the same advisory position with the Chamber that Al Switzer is being accused of exploiting. Sure wish I knew why that change was made …
Furthermore, how is an independent panel going to weigh past performance or the ability to perform certain services without the luxury of assessing all the feedback - both good and bad – that our commissioners have gotten over the past five years? How is it fair that our county commissioners would have to live with a decision that DIRECTLY impacts the perception of how well they are doing their job, if they didn't have anything to do with the decision?

Read the other blog where it talks about all the groups accepted this before even one presentation was made. Objections should have been made at that time, but not one of them did, not even Travel Klamath!!! I, too, think the Herald and News has an obligation to inform us, the public, as to what dollars are paying for the legal fees. We need tourism in Klamath County, and so every available dollar should be used for that; not for someone's legal fees because they could not "lose" respectfully, like the other groups did. "
