Ragland presents 'Nunsense' at anniversary performance

A musical comedy, "Nunsense," starring Sally Struthers, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Ross Ragland Theater.
It will kick off the theater's 2008-09 20th Anniversary Performance Season and be preceded by an opening night reception for ticket holders at 6:30 p.m.
The show is observing its 25th anniversary with this national tour starring Struthers, who is a two-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe winner.
Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, it boasts of more than 5,000 productions worldwide over the years in more than 21 languages.
The show begins as the Little Sisters of Hoboken determine their cook Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 fellow sisters. Because money must be raised immediately for the burials, they decide the best way to do that is to put on a variety show.
Struthers is best known for her performance in the television series "All in the Family." She also starred in the Fox television series "9 to 5" and her own CBS series "Gloria." Her recurring roles include the CBS comedy "Still Standing" and the CW’s "Gilmore Girls."
In addition, she co-starred in two motion pictures in the 1970s, "Five Easy Pieces" with Jack Nicholson and "The Getaway" with Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw.
Writer/director Dan Goggin has written the scores for the Off-Broadway production of "Hark!" and the Broadway production of "Legend." He received Outer Critics’ Circle Awards given to "Nunsense" for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Music. His “nunless” musical, "Balancing Act," has been presented in the U.S., London, and Australia.
"Nunsense" and "Nunsense II," both starring Rue McClanahan, have been recorded for the A&E Television Network. "Nunsense Jamboree" starred Georgia Engel and has been recorded for television at the Grand Ole Opry with Vicki Lawrence.
For ticket information and reservations, the theater's box office is at 218 N. Seventh St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon until show time on the days of the show, the telephone number is 884-LIVE (5483) and the Web site is www.rrtheater.org to purchase tickets online.
