Local agencies, schools asked to cut funding
State economist predicts major shortfall this biennum
Public schools and state-funded agencies in Klamath County are bracing for budget cuts as the Oregon faces revenue shortfalls of nearly $1 billion. Local agencies that provide services for mental health, substance abuse and children are expected to see cuts ranging from 2 percent to 8 percent, equivalent to tens of thousands of dollars, for the remainder of the current biennium, which ends June 30, 2009.
“What really is a challenge is we’re so far into the biennium,” said Sherri Bean, executive director of the Commission on Children and Families’ Klamath County office. The situation could get worse in the next biennium, officials say, and some agency leaders say they were told to expect budget cuts of up to 20 percent. " Less funding? Well, this should not only cripple our schools, it will also cripple the students and parents. The state requies our children attend school. Parents are already shelling out money for supplies, activities and transportation during the year which the school is unable to cover. Eventually, school budget cuts are going prevent our children from getting any education at all. "
