Local agencies, schools asked to cut funding

State economist predicts major shortfall this biennum

Saturday, November 22, 2008 5:06 PM PST
Public schools and state-funded agencies in Klamath County are bracing for budget cuts as the Oregon faces revenue shortfalls of nearly $1 billion. Local agencies that provide services for mental health, substance abuse and children are expected to see cuts ranging from 2 percent to 8 percent, equivalent to tens of thousands of dollars, for the remainder of the current biennium, which ends June 30, 2009.

“What really is a challenge is we’re so far into the biennium,” said Sherri Bean, executive director of the Commission on Children and Families’ Klamath County office. The situation could get worse in the next biennium, officials say, and some agency leaders say they were told to expect budget cuts of up to 20 percent. " Did someone mention my name. I am not against a unified school district, but I do not think the county has displayed the inability to take over. I have always felt the our school boards should have gone after our legislature to appeal the state law that will have the larger district take over the smaller one. This would have gave us some credibility throughout the state., and saved us from tearing ourselves apart. But for now I think that the county needs to use the timber funds and small school funding to at least get Henley elementary up and going again. This will be the counties last chance because this funding very well may not be there in another four years, as Rick very wells knows. "

" I told you not to count on the future city school "grants" availability !

Merge now!!, or listen to (bee) and loose what we have going good for our students. "

" Less funding? Well, this should not only cripple our schools, it will also cripple the students and parents. The state requies our children attend school. Parents are already shelling out money for supplies, activities and transportation during the year which the school is unable to cover. Eventually, school budget cuts are going prevent our children from getting any education at all. "

" How do you do cuts when you are already budgeted. I guess a lot of people hopes and aspirations just won't happen. This is tough when everything is planned for the year and now it is not. "
