Mike Haske is the new interim district manager

LAKEVIEW — Mike Haske wasn’t familiar with Lakeview and Lake County before being assigned there, but he’s learning quickly.

“This a learning curve for me,” said Haske, who recently took over as the interim district manager for the Bureau of Land Management’s Lakeview District. “I’m enjoying my experience so far. It’s a big piece of ground we have responsibility for. This district is in pretty good shape.”

The 52-year-old Haske, who earlier this year received his 30-year pin, took over for Shirley Gammon, who left in September for a new job with the Natural Resources Conservation Services.

“I think Shirley’s departure was a little bit unexpected and quick,” said Haske, who had been at the BLM’s Portland office since January 2004, most recently serving as branch chief for forest resources and special species.

Short tenure expected

He expects his tenure in Lakeview to be short. Interviews with candidates for a new district manager have started and he says a new manager could be named and on the job some time in February. When that happens, Haske will return to Portland.

Over his 30 years with the BLM, Haske has seen much of Oregon. His previous assignments included the Roseburg and Medford district offices.

While in Lakeview, he will be involved in shaping decisions on various issues, including litigation by the Oregon Natural Deserts Association on the adequacy of a Lakeview District BLM resource management plan, especially as it applies to possible wilderness areas, off-road vehicle use and grazing. Other issues include wild horses and burros, and management plans for the archeologically significant caves in the Paisley area.

Something that’s surprised him is the role BLM employees play in the Lakeview area, both on and off the job.

“I’m impressed by how important our employees are, especially in a small community,” Haske said.
