Breast cancer

Thursday, November 13, 2008 9:05 PM PST
A seven-part series called "Trial of their Lives" is running in this week's Herald and News. In a nutshell, the series from the Baltimore Sun follows the search for a breast cancer vaccine, and the women who are taking part in a medical trial at Johns Hopkins.

As part of the package, the Herald and News has been talking with local surgeons and specialists about risk factors, treatment and the importance of early detection.

Klamath Falls surgeon Dr. Marc Orlando said while he has great hopes for new research, he must focus on therapies available now, and he said, the best medicine has to offer is early detection.

“We’ve come a tremendous ways, even in the past decade,” Orlando said. “I’m not convinced we’ll ever prevent breast cancer, but with very diligent screening, we can detect these breast cancers at a very early stage."

What do you think of the series so far? We welcome your stories about breast cancer.

" Cancer is very hard to "sugar coat". It's a horrible disease that most people who have gone through it don't want to dwell on the horrible days, the days that you just don't know if they can make it through anymore chemo, how helpless you feel or how scared you are. We all want to look to the future and have some hope that there will be a cure some day soon. Right now we have wonderful doctors who are doing what they can for us now. That is our hope; and early detection. If I can say one thing here it is - to make sure you check yourself every month and get a mammogram! A doctor missed my tumor...I found it on a self exam 2 months later. Early dection is the way you can suvive this terrible disease. "

" Ojala there are better topics that we could discuss, since actually(indeed) the cancer is a very important and long topic. "

" I am the one on lung cancer, on the 16th. And no way did I surgar coat. I found out on the 18th, the cancer is growing. This is the 3rd time, I have my faith in God, and so many people that are praying for.I look at the up side. Stress can be so very bad for anyone with cancer. Am I scared you, of the unknown. But since 2002, there are 3 more ways to fight it. I thank God for everyday.

" I was a nurse for 26 years. I KNOW the realities of this disease. I also am a 3 1/2 year survivor. Sorry, but the stories are way to "sugar coated"....The reality is much more sour. How many women like me have no medical insurance? Is there a story about those breast cancer patients? "

" Doctor Virginia Liviingston Wheeler had a medical clinic in the San Diego area and was curing cancer at a 97% cure rate up and until her death. If you would like to now more about her pratice then check out the books she has written. "
