What's the ugliest road in town?

Sunday, November 2, 2008 12:50 AM PDT
Is it bumpy? Filled with potholes? Impossible to navigate? In dire need of grading? Repaving?

A story in Friday's paper discussed the status of city street maintenance and repairs. City officials say it would cost between $50 million and $80 million to bring all city streets up to fair condition. Finding funding is and has been a major hurdle. The city allocated $5.8 million to street maintenance, repair and construction in its current budget.

Are local roads really that bad? Which road (city or county) is the worst? We're taking recommendations below (and if you'd like to e-mail us a photo, click here.) To get things rolling, I nominate Grant Street, mainly because it's in my neighborhood.

We'll continue to follow this story, and welcome your suggestions.

" The 300 and 400 block of North Laguna are good streets. Maybe it would be better if there were potholes to slow the drivers down. They acctually put on the gas going down the hill. They are going at least 35 to 40 going by my house in the 200 block. The city police could make a fortune in speeding tickets if they sat on Wearing st. and Laguna in the a.m. when people go to work. "

" I think that the city needs to give all roads that are dirt in area's that have been developed for the last thirty years paved roads. I live on Torrey St. and it has not been paved. The neighbor hood has been fully developed for a long time. They tell me I can not use a burn barrel in accordace to the "clean air enviorment", but when some one drives down the road it makes more pollution than any burn barrel would. "

I hope these words taste better than feet, since infrastructure rebuilding is one way the next administration is looking to help rebuild the economy. Most of this stuff has been neglected since at least the Reagan admin, so just close your eyes and pick a target to blame. "

" The right hand turn off of SPRING STREET INTO EAST MAIN STREET (the under-tunnel beneath the trains above) has a TERRIBLE POTHOLE that is unavoidable. It's been there for a very long time, and hurts my tires, and I'd imagine other people's alignments, especially when taken too fast ! THEY NEED TO REPAIR THIS HOLE ASAP ! "

Viaduc on washburn wy heading south towards bypass. HORRID! who ever did the patchwork should be fired, demoted, SOMETHING! Its gonna be awesome to drive over when its all snowy! I hope the city plans on paying everyone's insurance deductibles, cause there will be accidents there! "

" North 10th Street. Not only is it in terrible shape, but the streetcleaners don't even bother. Last winter we saw a snowplow perhaps twice, after many people nagged the city to puh-leeze plow the street. Among other things, there are weeds growing up through the cracks in the road. "

" The street around KU are awful. When I drove bus up there I beat my bus to death. We ask the city to fix it please and they told us it was a school problem. They will not even plow arond back on the hill. I got hit twice over the years becouse of snow and they say it is not a proity. Like most things in K falls when it come to kids the city moves them to the bottom "

Greg wrote on Nov 4, 2008 11:22 AM:

" I would have to vote for Altamont as the worst, especially the RR crossing. With all its billions of $$ you would think the RR would take care of its responsibilities. But I guess they are just the fat rich kids on the block. Then there are the houses that disgust and repulse with their filth and disrepair. Is every house a junk yard? Clean it up people. "

DA wrote on Nov 4, 2008 6:22 AM:

" Mike.. You are correct.
The locals formed a volunteer, self funded, maintence group out of desperation because the county would not do anything.
The county still charges the road tax to each property. The county has never even placed a road bed down for the locals to maintain!
Yonna Woods rd. was the location you may remember, where last winter the older couple became stuck on the road in their 4 wheel drive truck while trying to navigate thru. It took the sheriff's office 2 days to rescue them as their stuck vehicle became covered in snow.
I believe a chip seal road would have prevented this.
Thanks for your interest in "our" problem. "

Mike wrote on Nov 3, 2008 8:37 PM:

" DA

Are you sure that yonna woods dr. is county?I am 95% positive that it is controlled through a local road department just like ground squirrel and the other gravel roads out there.

The county chip sealed bliss road from 140 to sprague river hwy.The county is also funding the bridge replacements on sprague river hwy.

Just saying not pointing fingers or nothing. "

Billi wrote on Nov 3, 2008 2:45 PM:

" I believe that all of the roads that are maintained by the city are in terrible shape. The roads downtown, main klamath, the numbered streets and the presidents are all in bad shape. If the city did a better job in the winter plowing, the roads would not be that bad!!! "

what will happen wrote on Nov 3, 2008 12:44 PM:

" We pay property taxes that are suppose to be used to maintain roads. For whatever reason(s) they can come up with, the roads do not get fixed.
Now, a child is walking to school, say KU and is walking in a city cross walk and breaks his or her leg in one of the huge cracks in the ceoss walk...is someone going to get sued?
I have sat on my front porch and watched women pushing baby strollers that have to go outside of the cross walks into traffic because they cannot puch thier strollers through the cross walk because the cracks are so extream it will not allow it..Mother and child get hit by a car..whose at fault?
They people who are in charge of the city roads had better pull their heads out of their ##### and get this taken care of before their is blood on thier hands. "

TJ wrote on Nov 3, 2008 9:30 AM:

" While not the worst, it is by far the busiest and therefore should be maintained better--Washburn Way between Walmart and Crosby. The County simply patched it, and it's terrible. "

DA wrote on Nov 3, 2008 8:18 AM:

" Yonna Woods RD. (COUNTY)

There are 81 residents that live within 12 miles on rutted mud roads. Mail boxes are 2 miles up on the dirt/mud road. We have to drive 18 miles each way (36 miles RT) to the post office just to get our daily post. The county has neglected the rural areas since the county was formed. "

DM wrote on Nov 2, 2008 8:17 PM:

" Everyone should take a drive up on Carroll st. Its the first left as you head up "KAGO hill". Its a one way road with a dead end and some horrible turn around. And it is probably the oldest road and worst maintained in Klamath Falls (Linkville). There is some old pavement peaking through in areas, but you can tell its at least 40 years old. The City has simply forgot about this road. "

fnord wrote on Nov 2, 2008 3:14 PM:

What the heck were they thinking?
Main St looks like total crap, and I can't even imagine how FUN it will be going over Washburn Wy when its all icy and slippery. Seriously, is Klamath trying to get us in accidents??? "

Dave wrote on Nov 2, 2008 7:32 AM:

" I vote for McClean street right by Pelican School. It's a joke that it is considered maintained by the city. Buses and vehicles have to manuever around chuck holes and disintegrating pavement on the way to dropping off kids. "
