Klamath Basin schools on lookout for gangs

Students wearing certain colors, symbols and numbers among signs

Friday, October 31, 2008 12:23 PM PDT
Klamath Basin school officials are keeping their eyes open for signs of gangs – symbols, numbers and colors – so they can react before gangs can establish themselves on school campuses. Local authorities also are on the lookout, and a group attended the Southern Oregon Gang Conference in Medford last month to discuss area trends in gang activity and possible solutions.

“We’ve got a small but serious and growing gang issue in Klamath Falls,” said Klamath County chief deputy district attorney Dave Groff, who attended the conference. Read the full story in Saturday's Herald and News print edition.

" Unfortunately, this is not reaching into the junior highs...where there are kids are more vunerable to the ideology of gang life. We need to reach the younger kids too . I do not know how many times I have seen junior high kids wearing their "colors" or numbers and no one says anything. The staffs at these levels need just as much training to identify the problems so they can get an earlier start on nipping the problem before it gets to the high school level...where it might be too late.
