Regional voters to decide taxes, school races

Residents in Lake, Siskiyou and Modoc counties will have choices to make on tax levies and council and school  board races in the Nov. 4 election.

Following is a roundup of the issues:

Lake County

Lake County Hospital Tax Levy: Lakeview area voters will be asked to approve an $8 million tax levy to expand and upgrade the Lake District Hospital. Lake County Measure 19-12 is a 30-year tax levy.

The levy of $1.60 per $1,000 of assessed value would increase taxes $160 a year for owners of a $100,000 home.

Lake County Commissioner Position No. 1: Incumbent Brad Winters, unopposed.

Lake County Clerk: Incumbent Stacie Geaney, unopposed.

Lake County Treasurer: Ann Crumrine, unopposed.

Paisley City Council: Robert Davis, Royce Weatherford and Dale Blair.

Lakeview Town Council: Two 4-year terms. Incumbent Sandra Wenzel and appointed incumbent Ralph Paull.

Lakeview Town Mayor: Mike Patrick.

Note: Because Patrick is a council member whose seat is not up for re-election, if he is elected the council will name a replacement member.

Siskiyou County: Butte Valley and Tulelake Basin

Dorris City Council: Three positions for four-year terms. Candidates include incumbents Liz Clontz and Harry Hickman and challengers Julie Barkman, Vicki Cockrell and Barbara Stewart.

Dorris City Council: One position for a two-year term.

Note: Unless a candidate registers as a write-in candidate by Oct. 21 and receives votes, the new city council will name a replacement member.

Butte Valley Unified School District Board, Area 1: Two positions for four-year terms. Candidates include incumbent Clydine McKay and Shirley Deane and challengers Olettta Bennett, Linda Hadwick and Paul Hensley.

Butte Valley Unified School District Board, Area 2: One four-year term. Candidates include incumbent Perry Fields and challengers Mike Truax and Walter John Jerde.

Tulelake Joint Unified School District: Three positions for four-year terms.

Candidates are incumbents Jerry LeQuieu, Tom Macy and Jeff Boyd, and challengers David Porter Misso and Danny Orr.

County Measure M, Uniform Transient Occupancy Tax Resolution: If passed, a room tax of 8 percent would increase to 10 percent. Requires two-thirds voter approval.

Modoc County

Tulelake Basin Joint Unified School District: Three positions for four-year terms. Candidates include Danny Orr, Jerry LeQuieu, Tom Macy, Jeff Boyd and David Porter Misso.

Measure K: If passed, Alturas city sales tax would increase a half-cent to enact Alturas police, fire and public safety supplemental funding measure.

Funds would be used for hiring personnel, purchasing equipment and training personnel.

Modoc County Supervisor Position No. 4 (Canby, Cal Pines and portion of Alturas): Appointed incumbent Loren “Shorty” Crabtree and James Wills.

The runoff election is necessary because neither Crabtree nor Wills received the necessary 50 percent plus one in the primary involving three candidates.
