Rain, cooler weather help fire crews

Officials say Middle Fork Fire crews going home

Monday, October 6, 2008 4:22 PM PDT
Rain and cooler weather this past weekend helped bring the Middle Fork Fire under control, officials said Monday. The fire burned more than 21,000 acres in the northern portion of the Sky Lakes Wilderness Area and a small corner of Crater Lake National Park.

Crews were being released and the fire’s base camp at Steward State Park is being dismantled. The lightning caused fire started Aug. 16 and burned 21,125 acres. Closures remain in effect and include trails in Crater Lake National Park south of Highway 62, the northwest corner of the Fremont-Winema National Forests in the Sky Lakes Wilderness, and the northern quarter of Sky Lakes. Closure information, including a map, are available on the Web at www.InciWeb.org/1497. Check back for more updates.
