Oregon Tech’s bid for an unbeaten home Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball season was blocked Tuesday night at Danny Miles Court.
Southern Oregon University continued its incredible string of wins over OIT in Klamath Falls with a 25-18, 26-24, 25-21 victory that moved the Raiders into a tie for the league lead with OIT.
Both teams are 6-1 in league play.
For the Hustlin’ Owls, who rarely are blocked at the net as well as they were Tuesday, now travel for their next three matches, which will complete the first half of the conference season.
“Comparing the blocks, (SOU) expected everyone to block, and did,” OIT senior captain Krista Wooley said. “We lost our focus and that’s been the difference all year. We have been able to settle down, and we didn’t (Tuesday).”
She said the Raiders were able to keep their focus.
SOU also attacked the net at a .330 clip, including a .680 effort in the first game, while the Hustlin’ Owls had one of their poorer performances of the season at .178.
“That’s our lack of blocking,” Wooley said of what has been traditionally one of OIT’s volleyball strengths. “(SOU) got here early, knew what they had to do and did it. I have a lot of respect for them. That’s a classy team.”
The Owls, who were ranked No. 17 in this week’s NAIA national poll released earlier Tuesday, appeared to have won the second game, but an apparent kill by Nicole Andrews was ruled to have landed outside the court.
Instead of OIT winning, 25-23, the game was tied and the Raiders scored the next two points to take an insurmountable 2-0 lead in games and went on to win at Danny Miles Court for the seventh straight year.
OIT’s last homecourt victory over Southern came in 2001 when Tom Loney was head volleyball coach. The Hustlin’ Owls last volleyball victory over SOU was in 2005 in Ashland.
Lindsey Stone, who has won conference Setter of the Week honors the last two weeks, was brilliant for the Raiders and finished with 41 assists for a team that had five players hit at over 30 percent.
Samantha Yutzie had 16 kills for SOU.

For the Owls, who play at Northwest Christian in Eugene Friday, Megan Christensen had a team-high nine kills with an attack effort of .438, while Lizzie Law had 29 assists, Krista Wooley seven digs and Krystie Vea two aces.
The Owls next are at home Oct. 10 against The Evergreen State.
