Cyclocross makes Klamath Falls debut
Posted 11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008
Bicycle racing once was popular in the Klamath Basin, but it has waned in recent years. Racing will return in a new, exciting and somewhat quirky fashion at 10 a.m. today at Moore Park. The sport of cyclocross is the fastest-growing bike racing discipline in the U.S., especially in Portland and the rest of Oregon. It will make its Klamath Falls debut with a series that will take place over the next four Sundays. “I just want to bring bike racing to Klamath Falls again,” race organizer Lillian Schiavo said. “There’s a group of us that races, and we’re constantly traveling. We got to the realization that nobody else is going to bring it unless we do, so I just decided to make it happen.” Cyclocross combines elements of both road racing and mountain biking, as well as man-made and natural obstacles that force competitors to dismount and remount their bikes.
