Soccer roundup: Mazama, Henley boys win
Posted 11 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008
Junior forward Charles Swann scored a hat trick before halftime, and Mazama’s defense held for a 3-1 victory over Tulelake in a non-conference boys soccer game Thursday. Adrian Chavarin, Alejandro Ruelas and Darwin Partida each had an assist for the Vikings (2-3), who outshot the Honkers, 24-6. “The boys dominated the game with their passing ability and their speed. We played wonderfully. I’m really proud of my boys.” Goalkeeper Brandon Ramirez scored Tulelake’s lone goal on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Tulelake will host American Christian in an Evergreen League match Saturday, while Mazama opens Southern Sky Conference play Tuesday at Ashland.
Henley 3, Junction City 1: Michael Kelly scored two goals, brother Matt Kelly had two assists, and Henley defeated visiting Junction City, 3-1, in a non-conference game to run its unbeaten streak to five matches. Danny Celemin added his fifth goal of the season for the Hornets (4-1-1), who will host Sisters on Saturday.
Weed 3, Butte Valley 2: Butte Valley senior Marcos Tapia scored two goals, but Weed scored in the final minute to earn a 3-2 non-league victory in Dorris. Tapia scored first on a header from a Ricardo Andrade corner kick, then added a rebound off a penalty kick with five minutes left. The Cougars (3-4), however, took advantage of the absence of an injured Andrade to make a final push. The Bulldogs (4-2) will travel to Redding Christian for an Evergreen match Saturday.
