Klamath Falls man drowns after jumping from bridge
Posted 5:40 p.m., Monday, Sept. 15, 2008: A Klamath Falls man drowned Sunday evening after jumping off Crystal Springs Bridge into Lost River. Klamath County Sheriff’s Office deputies and dive rescue team members responded to a 911 call at about 6:25 p.m. The caller reported Gordon Schmid, 40, had not surfaced after jumping from the bridge.
Schmid’s girlfriend attempted to rescue him, but was unable to get to him, authorities said. Klamath County Fire District No. 1 members also attempted to locate Schmid by swimming and free diving but were unsuccessful.
The dive rescue team found Schmid in 18 feet of water. He was taken to Sky Lakes Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Authorities said Schmid was attempting to swim across the river with his clothes and work boots on. They believe the clothing and footwear contributed to the drowning.
