    Name that rivalry

On Tuesday night, the H&N sports department covered the crosstown doubleheader between Triad and Hosanna Christian. Seeing as the teams are in the same town and league, and each school's respective gyms are packed more so than usual when they square off, we sports guys have determined this clash needs a name.

General fund not used for air money

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 11:51 PM PDT
Response to “Where is the county getting the money?”

Lana Shaw asserts in an Aug. 25 letter that the monies used for the incentive to provide northbound flights came from the general fund. This is incorrect. The general fund was never considered as a source for this effort. The monies pledged for the incentive are to be borrowed from equipment reserve funds.

She also stated that she was “pressured into saying she would retire early” to keep one of their valued employees. This is not true. She stated to the entire budget committee (six members) she and her husband had decided that she would retire in January instead of July.

The assessor asked the Department of Revenue to state to the budget committee how much could be cut without losing the state grant. The Department of Revenue stated that the committee could eliminate the recording position that was approved and requested by the assessor and the Department of Revenue three years ago because of the increase in recordings. The recordings have subsequently decreased and the Department of Revenue said it would accept the reduction of that position.

There are no hidden funds. They are accounted for in the budget, which is available to the public to review anytime. It will be on the Web site this month.

The majority of county funds are dedicated by law for specific use. I have been accounting for the funds for the last 19 years and I do not know about any hidden funds.

A summary of the revenue and expenditures is available and filed with the budget committee every month. If you want to review them, please contact me.

Michael Long

Klamath County Treasurer and Budget Officer

" So "Sue" if that is truly your name, put your last name on as well....I wonder how many "Sues" there are in Klamath.

Yes on the Charter. "

" So as I read these comments I have to laugh, if everyone feels so strong & truely believes in what they have to say why isnt anyone putting there name to it? "

Loving It wrote on Sep 5, 2008 10:54 AM:

" Wow, no one can answer that question, but you obviously stirred the pot. Good Job "Please Explain", I love reading these people trying to make excuses.

Now there resorting to the Bigfoot theory, HA, this charter proposal definetly has someone back pedalling, I think I will vote yes so we can see what has really been going on in our county government over the last couple of decades.

I can tell you right now, that if this charter passes, you will see a big increase of shredders being delivered to the commissioners office.

I love it. "

Yes wrote on Sep 5, 2008 10:50 AM:

" The funds used were "Borrowed from Equipment Reserve Funds".

Too bad these commissioners wouldn't get "creative" like this when it comes to keeping employees.

I guess the kickbacks from the airlines are better than keeping someone employed.

Enough of this "creative borrowing", we need commissioners that will do the job HONESTLY.

I'm voting yes. "

Both Sides wrote on Sep 5, 2008 10:40 AM:

" Ok, I feel like I am talking to a bunch of democrats that cannot answer a question with a straight honest answer.

Please will anybody with any intelligence please answer my simple question, I will ask one more time.

When the commissioners tell us there is no money, the department heads have to lay off people. Are you with me so far?

Then the lay offs take place, people are sent packing and there lives are now in shamble. So far pretty simple.

Then all of a sudden, the commissioners "FIND" some extra money that they didn't know was there and it was all a surprise to them, and we are all now blessed with this extra money, Ok, still with me?

Instead of recalling these people that were laid off, the money goes to the commissioners and department heads to give themselves raises.

Ok, now if this money is used to give themselves raises, it is obviously under a line item that CAN be used for wages and staff, why did they lay off these employees, where did this money come from. When I am in financial trouble, I don't have bags of money falling from the sky.

You can ask virtually any county employee, this is how it is EVERY year. Staff goes down, commissioners wages go up.

WHERE IS THE FAIR REPRESENTATION IN THAT. You can take your monkey suit out of the freezer whenever you want, but this is reality. Maybe you should work for the county sometime in the end of June and get your pink slip, and you will know what I mean. "

From Please Explain wrote on Sep 5, 2008 8:59 AM:

" Very simple answer: You have no clue how the budget works!! You have no clue that certain money is tagged for certain uses only and cannot come from general funds!! Until you understand how budgets work, you probably need to quit accusing. The money for the airlines did NOT come from Geneal Funds, thus no money was EVER taken away from wages. Good Grief!! Stop all this assuming! "

Big Foot wrote on Sep 5, 2008 6:37 AM:

" This "theory" of hidden money from, what appears, to be the citizen's charter group headed by Bill Brown and Reg LeQuieu, remind me of the hunt for Big Foot. It is absolutely ridiculous, laughable, and down right unbelievable. There are always fuzzy pictures of something, but no one has captured it. But wait a minute!!! Someone did capture Bib Foot and hid it in a freezer. Finally, the proof of Big Foot! OOPS!!!! It was nothing but a monkey suit. Well, this group keeps talking about hidden money. It sounds like a monkey suit story that they want eveyone to believe. I end this by asking these people: Where's the "beef?" Where's the proof? I agree with the other blogger, Thank You. Either produce the proof or shut up. I will vote no on the charter. "

Too Obvious wrote on Sep 5, 2008 6:04 AM:

" It too obvious to me. Working 19 years gives him plenty of time to open up different accounts through out the county. The only thing 19 years means to me is he has plenty of experience in hiding this money.

And as one blogger said, If we knew where the money was hidden at, then it wouldn't be hidden now would it.

I see that the anti charter people are still not answering the question that another blogger put out and that is if they are not hiding the money, why do they all of a sudden find a great pocket of it, only after they lay off employees?

Seems like they can force people to retire, and paste there office with copies of the pink slips they hand out every year, but you don't see them going without a raise.

It's time for a change and accountability, it's time for the charter. "

To Thank You wrote on Sep 5, 2008 6:00 AM:

" When you get your nose out, I am still waiting for you to answer my question posted under "Please Explain".

I would still like to know the answer. "

Thank you Mr. Long wrote on Sep 4, 2008 11:03 PM:

" As I read, he has been elected for 19 years to serve as our county treasurer. The accusations are nothing but hot air from hot headed people who have no proof. If they had proof, wouldn't they have reported it to the authorities?????
They only want to stir up things against a very honorable, hardworking, and truly a man of character. Put the proof where your mouth is, or just plain shut up. We have had enough from this charter group accusing and slaming people. It is time to grow up and act like adults. We sure do not want people like this running our government. Either bring the proof to the surface and to the authorites or go back into the walls where you came from. I am so tired of it. For all this, vote NO on the Charter. This will shut these accusers up once and for all. "

Please Explain wrote on Sep 4, 2008 7:05 PM:

" Please explain to me why if they don't have money hidden, why then lay people off then find money later on to buy frivolous toys and to bail out airlines that don't care about the people of Klamath County.

I see it every year that these commissioners have the department heads issue lay off notices, then July 1 comes around and dozens of employees are laid off. Then shortly after that, they find all this money to give all the department heads as well as themselves raises.

If we can't prove they are hiding money, can you explain that? And don't use the excuse that there are certain line items that can be used for only one thing. They find the money to give themselves raises after they lay off employees.

I'll be awaiting your response "

You Think about it wrote on Sep 4, 2008 7:01 PM:

Please think before you post. "

Think about it wrote on Sep 4, 2008 3:58 PM:

" Heres the bottom line. For the people that claim theres money being hidden, please prove it! I would love to see the cold hard facts to support these bitter statements. Grow up! Im assuming these negative blogs are from adults, if so thats extremely dissapointing. Take a good look at yourselves & your behavior. People shouldnt throw stones when they are in glass houses. Until you have facts and proof, its just someones opinion. Stop the blame game & find ways to improve situations, not point fingers. "

Amazing wrote on Sep 4, 2008 1:55 PM:

" It seems that there are a lot of people around this county that have nothing better to do but bash on the county, emergency services and every other "government agency" even if all of these agencies are all regulated by the law with audits (done from independant agencies) etc. Most of us people that work for the government are not slimes, we are law abiding citizens just like you and we get up and put our pants on one leg at a time just like you. Don't get me wrong there are government employees who are slimes but not all of us. "

Hiding Something wrote on Sep 4, 2008 12:21 PM:

" Thanks for clearing it up? I don't see anywhere in this letter where anything is cleaned up.

Sounds like he's hiding something to me. "

Too Sad wrote on Sep 4, 2008 12:20 PM:

" It's still all tax money, It's too bad you have lay people off, but find ways to grease the palms of the airlines.

This does nothing for Klamath County, but force us to drive to Medford for cheaper fairs.

I believe that there is hidden money too, it's been a well known fact around here for many years.

As good as these people are, no auditor will find it. Can anyone explain to me how they can find money when they want to, but can't find it to keep employees?

I will be awaiting your answer. "

Sandy wrote on Sep 4, 2008 11:16 AM:

" Does "Give me a Break" not know about audits? Do you really think that hidden bank accounts around town would not be discovered during state-required audits? Thanks, Mr. Long, for trying to set the record straight. There are some negative people that are never going to trust anyone--thankfully I'm not one of them. "

Give me a Break wrote on Sep 4, 2008 7:03 AM:

" The Klamath County Treasurer is telling us there are no hidden funds? Does the old saying "the kid is guarding the cookie jar" ring a bell.

Cmon Mr. Long we voters know that there are accounts in banks through out this town that may not say "Klamath County" on them, but we all know they are there.

I would be interested to see what propoganda is posted on the web site later.

Nice try Mr. Long, but I think this letter just made it worse for you and the Commissioners. "
