    Battle zucchini

Overwhelmed with zucchini? Some of us at the Herald and News are. One of our copy editors brought in a box of giant zucchini last week and put us to the test. I turned one specimen into four loaves of zucchini bread and a casserole and still had a significant amount left. That’s not counting the zucchini that ended up in my eyebrows. Luckily, the Herald and News is here to help. Each year we print recipes from readers. If you have a tasty favorite, send it to news@heraldandnews.com.

    Name that rivalry

On Tuesday night, the H&N sports department covered the crosstown doubleheader between Triad and Hosanna Christian. Seeing as the teams are in the same town and league, and each school's respective gyms are packed more so than usual when they square off, we sports guys have determined this clash needs a name.

Plot secrets

Monday, August 4, 2008 2:42 PM PDT
I'm not always eager to read books recommended by other people. And so, I've been dragging my feet for the past three weeks as my daughter has been after me to read the "Twilight" series. (I'm not much of a vampire fan, more of a Frankenstein's monster sort of a person.) But she finally convinced me to start reading the first book.

    So far I'm hooked.

I keep having to tell my daughter not to give away the plot. She's so excited that we're reading the same book series at the same time.

We've done this before, but it was different. I read the Harry Potter series out loud to my kids. We would spend hours during beautiful summer days inside, hunkered down on the couch and chairs, listening together word for word.

This is a lot harder. I really DON'T want to know what happens next. (We have this problem when we watch movies together, too.)

Do you read the same books as your children? Have you ever had the plot spoiled?

— Holly Owens, H&N copy editor

" Trisha, there is a next one? I had heard that she wasn't writing any more. I wish she would do some that are set a few years in the future to see what happenes to everyone and to follow up on other things. "

" I have read all 4 of the books and LOVE them. They also were recommended to my by my daughter. I am excited for the next one that is to be told from Edward's point of view. "

" Edward is no match for Barnabus Collins ( from Dark Shadows ) but it was a fast read.

A number of my cousins love the series and have been big fans since it originally came out in hardback. "

" I read all 4 books in just a few days. I absolutely love them. I am supper excited for the movie releasing in November although I am sad that Harry Potter was moved to next summer. The story isn't about your average mythical vampires and the books are more about true love than anything supernatural. Although the supernatural really adds to and makes the complications for all the characters. They are great and a huge page turner, I recommend them to everyone. "

" I was loaned this book by a guy, kind of suprised he was reading it but i quickly got sucked into the whole series and now am awaiting the movie release. I spent many nights up tilll 2 am, it just has a way of taking over you life & thoughts. I haven't had a book do that to be ever. "

" I'm not a parent, but I got addicted to the Stephenie Meyer novels quickly. Read them all withing a few days. I've recommended them to several people, some of which are indeed parents. They became addicted as I am! I only told them the beginning storyline to get them hooked, just like a movie trailer would. "

" Word of mouth in our family, and a family jewel reading each others' novel of the moment is. Someone want to suggest an adult novel, with school starting I have that "need to read" something different. I"ve read the Twilight series, as suggested in H&N last Halloween, and Barbara Walter's, Audition. "

" Just to make a point, I believe that the reason people have discovered this series and it has grown so popular is because the exposure to these type of series is far greater while in the aftershock of the harry potter series. "

" Well ... it's not exactly osmosis ...
I generally go with what's written on the book jacket, and I subscribe to a bunch of e-newsletters on books. I don't rely entirely on booksellers' and critics' recommendations, but my tastes in reading aren't often the same as my friends' and family's. So ... maybe if I threw in some osmosis, I could vary my reading list. "

" If you are not always eager to read books other people suggest, how do you know what books may intrigue you? Osmosis? "

" Now there are three of us in our family reading the "Twilight" series. And we're all on the last book. Thanks to a friend at work who loaned me his copy of the fourth book, we have two copies to divvy between three people. It's working out so far with a minimum of behind-your-back snatching of books. But the hardest part isn't sharing the books. The hardest part is not giving away what is happening in the story line. There's a lot of "Hey, have you read page 57, or 118 yet?" And there's also a lot of knowing chuckling going on. So far it's a great read. "

Twilight parent wrote on Aug 23, 2008 3:09 PM:

" Can you believe some predominantly "Breaking Dawn advocate" blog sight was destroyed by some "Breaking Dawn Haters". AS a concerned parent I observed my daughters behavior after reading this last book of the Twilight series. Surprisingly she was fine and complete with the way it ended. Thank-you Stephanie Meyer. I'm still reading it so don't ruin it for me. By the way, a couple of my friends would play Jacobs' and his families' role in the movie, with my daughter as Bella, her Dad is not a sheriff, but he fishes a lot. I know a possible Edward but my daughter doesn't like him enough. "

" The Twilight series is excellent! A friend of mine got me reading them. I wasn't too motivated at the beginning....just not much of a vampire fan but when I started reading the first book and realized the setting is in Forks Washington I was hooked because I could really picture everything! When you've partied on some of the same beaches in that small town it makes it that much more interesting! LOL Trying to keep my friend from spilling her guts about the plot though since she's ahead of me in the series is a chore though! "

New Fan wrote on Aug 12, 2008 2:18 PM:

" 9 hours of sleep in the last two days because of books 1 and 2. I cant put them down, but I would if the plot was spoiled for me.. I refuse to watch trailers until I have read all 4. At the rate I am going, I should be done early Thursday morning. "

DL wrote on Aug 8, 2008 9:32 PM:

" My mom is one of those who, when she can't remember whether or not she has read a book, will read the last chapter. This is fine if you have read the book, but it ruins it if you haven't. I don't like to know the entire plot before I read a book or watch a movie. If I know how it ends it spoils it for me. I don't have kids, but I am reading the Twilight series. I have only read the first 2 so far but I am hooked. I also read all 7 Harry Potter books. A good book is a good book no matter how old you are. "

Twilight parent wrote on Aug 6, 2008 11:30 AM:

" I read my Dad's westerns. He always gave away the plot "The guy shoots 'em and gets the girl" and I kept reading those books as fast as they came out. I read all three of my daughter's "Twilight" books and she didn't give away any of the plot even forcing me to finish the third book (Bella whines too much). Interesting though, my daughter wants me to watch every trailer from the Twilight movie, and I keep telling her not to ruin the movie for me. "
