    Battle zucchini

    Overwhelmed with zucchini? Some of us at the Herald and News are. One of our copy editors brought in a box of giant zucchini last week and put us to the test. I turned one specimen into four loaves of zucchini bread and a casserole and still had a significant amount left. That’s not counting the zucchini that ended up in my eyebrows.     Name that rivalry

    On Tuesday night, the H&N sports department covered the crosstown doubleheader between Triad and Hosanna Christian. Seeing as the teams are in the same town and league, and each school's respective gyms are packed more so than usual when they square off, we sports guys have determined this clash needs a name.

Fourth of July schedules

    Klamath Basin residents can celebrate the Fourth of July with street fairs, parades, fishing, picnics and fireworks. Following is a list of events by community:

Klamath Falls:

    •  Street fair at 9 a.m. Friday, on Main Street. There will be several vendor booths, a children’s area with face painting and games and shows by musicians, dancers and motocross riders at the intersections.

    •  The Fourth of July Parade down Klamath Avenue will begin at 10 a.m. Parade entries include floats, high school bands and the Klamath County Chamber of Commerce Perky the Pelican.


   •  The Klamath Falls Community Band will present its annual Fourth of July Concert 7 p.m. Friday in Veterans Memorial Park. It is free and open to the public.

    • The annual fireworks display begins at dusk, about 10 p.m., at Veterans Memorial Park downtown. The fireworks will be set off from a barge in Lake Ewauna. The show, which features $11,000 in fireworks, will last about 20 minutes.

    The parade will begin with a fly-over by the Kingsley Field F-15s. Men and women who recently returned from military service overseas are expected to participate.

    •  The Klamath Falls Community Band will perform at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. Admission is free.

Children’s Museum of Klamath Falls grand opening, noon to 4 p.m. Friday. Ribbon cutting at noon. Saturday hours 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The museum is at 711 E. Main St. Admission is $7 per person. $2 off coupons available at Human Bean locations.

    Alturas:

    •  Rotary Fish Derby Friday for children 12 years old and younger, 8 a.m. at Pine Creek Reservoir.

    •  Horseshoe tournament and children’s games from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Desert Rose Casino parking lot.

    •  Street Dance on Fifth Street to live music from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday.

    •  Fourth of July  Parade 11 a.m. Saturday; also numerous festivities in the park.

    •  Fireworks display Saturday at California Pines Lodge at about 10 p.m.

    Canby: Fireworks display at about 10 p.m.

    Chiloquin:

    •  Fourth of July Parade at 1 p.m. followed by face painting, a  basketball shoot, a dunk tank, and kids games at the city park, where a free barbecue will begin at 4 p.m. and be followed by a free ice cream social at the Methodist Church.

    • Also at the park, a dance from 5 to 8 p.m.

    Dorris:

    •  Fourth of July Parade at 10 a.m. followed by a flag raising, a bell ringing, the Dorris Centennial History Sculpture Wall dedication.

    •  Dorris Lions Club barbecue at 12:30 p.m. and the Butte Valley Chamber of Commerce auction at 1:30 p.m., both at the Little League Field along with numerous other activities.

    Lake of the Woods: Fireworks display at about 10 p.m.

    Lakeview:

    •  Lakeview Rotary Wild Goose Chase Race at noon at Drews Creek.

    •  The Songwriter’s Showcase featuring music by Lakeview area performers at 5:30 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 3 N. F St.

    •  Feeley Fiesta & Feast at 6 p.m. followed by a fireworks display at about 9:45 p.m., both at the Lake County Fairgrounds.

    Malin:

    •  Breakfast served by Malin merchants from 8 to 10 a.m.

    •  Fourth of July Parade at 11 a.m.

    •  Malin Park Car Show and Swap Meet/Yard Sale from noon to 3 p.m.; swimming available at the park; Old-Time Fiddlers will perform; food and beverages available.

    Tulelake: Tulelake Volunteer Fire Department barbecue fundraiser from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds; fireworks display there at about 10 p.m.
