    Battle zucchini

Overwhelmed with zucchini? Some of us at the Herald and News are. One of our copy editors brought in a box of giant zucchini last week and put us to the test. I turned one specimen into four loaves of zucchini bread and a casserole and still had a significant amount left. That’s not counting the zucchini that ended up in my eyebrows. Luckily, the Herald and News is here to help. Each year we print recipes from readers. If you have a tasty favorite, send it to news@heraldandnews.com.

Hot weather? Not quite yet

Klamath Falls-area residents should not expect warmer weather during the coming week.

The National Weather Service is predicting slightly cooler highs, with lows 5 to 10 degrees below normal for this time of year.

In May, the weather was slightly cooler than normal, except for an unseasonably warm stretch from May 15 to 19. Precipitation for the month was 1.97 inches, which was 1.17 inches higher than normal.

So far this calendar year, there have been 5.25 inches of precipitation, which is below the normal 5.83 inches for that period. Since Sept. 1, there have been 9.84 inches, below the normal 10.50 inches for the water year, the National Weather Service said.

The snowpack is higher this year than normal. At Crater Lake National Park, the snowpack is currently 51 inches, which is higher than the average 42 inches.
