Older swimmers say goodbye to local competition today

For most of the older swimmers at this year’s Great Basin Invitational swimming meet, today will be the end of an era.

Only Jessie Klauder of the Oregon Water Wolves will be involved with competitive swimming after the final day of action that begins at 9 a.m. at the Ella Redkey Municipal Pool.

Many of the others not only will see their careers come to an end, they also will make their final athletic appearance in Klamath Falls.

“Probably,” Darrick Waugh of the host Klamath Basin Aquatics team said. “I might swim a little bit next summer, but this, basically, is my last home meet.”

Waugh, C.J. Glarrow, Kevin Ortiz-Urciuoli and Jennifer Zimmer all will see their competitive swimming careers, at least in the foreseeable future, are over.

Waugh will compete as a distance runner at Cal State-Chico, Glarrow will enter the military, and Ortiz-Urciuoli and Zimmer will be at colleges that do not offer collegiate swimming programs.

Klauder, meanwhile, will attend Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash.

“One of the reasons I picked that school is because I can swim,” she said after she had finished her races Saturday. “Otherwise, I would have gone to (Oregon Tech) because I want to be a nurse.”

Klauder has trained this summer to be ready for PLU, where the season begins in September. She also has helped coach her summer team. “I will never stop swimming,” she said.

As an 18-year-old, her age-group career also might be at an end.

“When (organizers) don’t restrict (meets) to 18-year-olds, I will swim in the summer,” she said.

Waugh, who will compete in cross country and track and field at CSU-Chico, could swim next summer, as can Glarrow. Both are 17 this year.

But, if next year is much like this year, that probably will not happen.

Most of the older swimmers on the host KBA team have had little time in the pool to train since they serve as lifeguards at the municipal pool.

“I haven’t swam much since state, but I thought I’d come out of retirement because I love coach (Dan Zimmer) so much,” Waugh said. “But, it’s pretty tough. It would be cool to swim in college, but I can swim on my own to cross-train.”

Waugh opened his Saturday with a 200-yard individual medley, an event he never has competed in before.

“I thought I was going to die,” Waugh said. “The other events feel better because (the 200 IM) felt so bad.”

Waugh said he might make one road trip this season to swim, likely to Grants Pass.

While Waugh entered a race he never had competed in before, Klauder had to adjust to the brilliant sun that shined Saturday on the Ella Redkey pool.

“You just need to get a good warmup and get a good feel for the pool, and I have swam here for years,” Klauder said. “In the backstroke, though, you have to keep the sun out of your eyes.”

Her team trains indoors at the OIT pool.

The leaders

Just past the halfway point of the meet, Klamath Basin Aquatics holds a slight lead over the Oregon Water Wolves. KBA has 1,324 points, and the Water Wolves follow with 1,177.

The Prineville Swim Team and Grants Pass Aquatics are tied for third, just ahead of Cascade Aquatics of Redmond. The Bend Swim Club, Superior Stingrays of Medford, Crescent City Swim Club and Grants Pass YMCA Swimming complement the field of this year’s meet.

Klauder won the closest individual race Saturday when she eked out a win in the girls 17-over 100 freestyle. Klauder won in 55.32 seconds, while Stephanie North of KBA came in 55.56.

Jessie Klauder, along with her sister, Nycole, is among the swimmers to win at least three individual events in their respective age divisions during Saturday’s competition.

Also with three or more wins Saturday were KBA’s Kristin McBride and Karl Britsch, Cascade’s Joseph DeLeone, Joshua White and Tyler Gordon, and Bend’s Taylor Tucker and Matt Howell.

Two-event winners were Bend’s Mallory Mozzetti and Teagan Tucker, and Prineville’s Bailey Parrott, Paul Miller and Kellie Foley.

" Long live Matt Miles! He was the "Billy Kilmer" of Semi Pro Football: tough, gritty, fiery leader, winning mentality. I will never forget this "young gunslinger", he made this league better for being in it.
