California man to use insanity defense
June 15, 2007
Here’s an update on public safety issues in the area:
Alleged murderer
to argue insanity
A California man accused of stabbing his cousin to death at a Lakeview motel last February plans to argue insanity.
The attorney for James Edwards Jr., has filed a motion in Lake County Circuit Court to rely on evidence that Edwards was insane when the stabbing occurred, court documents show.
In response, Lake County District Attorney David Schutt requested in court papers Edwards be evaluated by a psychiatrist or psychologist from the Oregon State Hospital.
The 41-year-old Susanville man was arrested Feb. 11, accused of stabbing Mark Thomas of Burns up to 13 times with a bayonet knife, records say.
The two were visiting Lakeview and staying at a motel when they began fighting and Edwards allegedly picked up the knife to attack him.
Vehicular
homicide trial set
The trial of a Klamath Falls woman who police said was intoxicated when she drove her car over a man lying in the road has been set for Aug. 29.
Brooke Brosterhous, 23, is accused of drinking alcohol in the early morning hours of Aug. 20, 2006, and then driving her car over Brent Davis, who was lying on Crest Street talking on his cell phone.
Police said Brosterhous didn’t stop her car, even after passengers told her she hit somebody. She faces charges of criminally negligent homicide, felony hit and run and driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Fire still under
investigation
Authorities still are uncertain what sparked a June 6 fire that destroyed two South Spring Street businesses.
Authorities haven’t ruled out any possible cause of the blaze that originated inside the Furniture Warehouse and quickly spread next door to the Cummings Roofing warehouse, said Klamath County Fire District No. 1 Fire Marshal Jim Kenworthy.
A nearby abandoned rail car also was destroyed, and a third business, Heaton Steel, sustained minor water damage after firefighters battled the blaze.
Man gets five years
A Klamath Falls man was sentenced last month to five years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a minor.
Klamath County Circuit Judge Richard Rambo convicted Edward Steimel of first-degree attempted sodomy and second-degree sex abuse. Steimel also faces five years post-prison supervision for abusing the girl.
Police: Consider
alternative routes
Klamath Falls police officers are urging motorists to expect daytime traffic congestion in construction zones and consider alternate routes because of road closures.
Closures are at the intersections of Shasta Way and Austin Street, South Sixth Street and Austin Street and Avalon Street and Pershing Way.
