LAKE OF THE WOODS - Leonard Hill admits he is getting older.
The 54-year-old has won the Lake of the Woods Run 17 times.
Saturday, at the 29th running of the event, Hill finished fourth in the 15K race, one of the few times the former Olympic-caliber runner did not finish first or second in the longest of two races.
“I'm getting older,” Hill said with a grin Saturday.
“I ran the race in 53 minutes just three years ago. I probably ran a 47, 48(-minute 15K race) a few years ago. I also remember running a (one-hour, one-minute) race when it was a 12-mile course.”
He was timed in 57 minutes, 53.84 seconds Saturday.
Weather cooperates
Hill noted the brilliant condition for Saturday's race.
“At least it wasn't snowing,” he said. Snow still was under trees a year ago and Hill recalled a wide range of weather conditions for the event. “There was one year it was like running in a blizzard. Then the next year was like this and the race finished where you could jump off the dock into the lake. You wanted relief.”
Hill, who is one of a handful of runners to win all three distances at the annual Crater Lake Rim Runs and Marathon, last won the Lake of the Woods Race in 2005. He finished second to Lakeview's Damian Baldovino last year.
“This is just a great community race,” Hill said. “It's too bad more people from (the Rogue Valley) don't come to run here.”
His daughters Marja and Cayla both ran Saturday.
Running with purpose
Sharolyn Gallagher had a reason to compete in her first Lake of the Woods Run.
She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a central nervous system disorder, a year ago.
“I probably had it before I was diagnosed and I am motivated to stay active as long as I can,” Gallagher said after she placed 89th out of 137 runners in the two-mile run.
She said her mother also has MS and is bed-ridden.
“I want to do what I can to counteract (the disorder). As long as I can keep moving, I will keep moving. I will never be a runner, but I'll keep plodding along,” Gallagher said.
“Dr. (Alden) Glidden once told me there are two types of people, runners and swimmers,” Gallagher said. “I told him I was a swimmer. Now, I'm a walker and a swimmer.”
Saturday, she ran with Karen Hottman, and covered her two miles in 30:43.85.
Cooling down
Distance runners traditionally take time after a long race to jog as they cool down.
Saturday, many of the 15K runners hit the lake.
As Klamath Union High School track and field coach Mike Heeron walked past Hill, Hill said: “You're wet.”
Herron responded: “The last mile was easier knowing that I could roll into the lake when I got done with the race.”
Learning curve
John Duran of Keno ran in the 15K race for the first time and finished 42nd, having covered the course in 1:20:18.02.
“I'm not a runner,” Duran said. “I don't know how to pace my self. The hills were tough.”
Duran, who has usually watched his daughters compete, especially in swimming, has lost 120 pounds over the last year and said a new, almost revolutionary, stomach surgery has helped his weight loss.
He said he is one of only four Oregonians to have the surgery which, as of yet, is not covered by insurance. He has been told that it will become the No. 1 form of weight control surgery sometime in the near future.
