Henley, Tulelake will have new fields next year

The Tulelake baseball team holds up the plaque it received after winning the CIF Division III North Section Championship Saturday at the Tulelake/Butte Valley Fairgrounds. It was the last home game the Honkers will play at the site as next year's squad will play on a soon-to-be finished on-campus field at the high school.

Tulelake went out with a brilliant victory.

The question now is will Henley make its final scheduled appearance at Kiger Stadium a memorable one.

Tulelake’s final appearance at its long-time home field at the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds was the Honkers’ 9-5 win over Fall River to give the school its first back-to-back sectional baseball titles.

“We talked about that before the game,” winning pitcher Nick Baley, a junior, said. Baley and the returning Tulelake players are scheduled to play on a new home field behind the high school near the school’s track.

In addition to a baseball diamond, a softball field also is being completed, part of a $70,000 project to give the Honkers a field on campus.

Coach Dean Teig said players and coaches from this year’s team were going to put together a time capsule, bury it at the fairgrounds field and wait at least 15 years before digging it up and sharing memories.

“We all wrote letters on our personal thoughts about what this field meant to us,” Teig said.

Henley’s turn

Now, it is Henley’s chance to reflect. The Hornets, along with Klamath Union and Mazama, have used Kiger Stadium as their home field for decades, years in which they won numerous league championships and six state titles.

Henley had planned to make its debut on its new, on-campus facility this season, but a variety of problems changed those plans. Getting water on the field was among the major issues to be resolved, along with completing an adequate backstop.

That meant one more season at Kiger.

This season’s 15-0 Skyline Conference record gave the Hornets their 14th league title, and 11th since 1991. Five of the Hornets’ state titles also have come since 1991.

Today’s Class 4A state quarterfinal game against Brookings-Harbor is expected to be the Hornets’ farewell to Kiger since they would have to travel for the semifinals if they win. The state finals will be played in Keizer.

Changes already are in motion for next season.

One of the most dramatic will be in the Mountain Valley League, where member schools have accepted the request of Rogue Valley Adventist School to play varsity basketball.

“The league has spent considerable time since December working on accommodating them,” Paisley athletic director Jon Jones said. “We have brought them into the Friday-Saturday schedule.”

Rogue Valley Adventist will play early Friday, before sundown, and then wait until after sundown for its Saturday games, both home and away, to accommodate the religious tradition of the Adventists.

What remains a question mark for the league is what happens at playoff time, an which still is being deliberated. A decision on postseason play is not expected until sometime toward the end of summer.

Other leagues have made similar accommodations for Adventist schools, at least for regular-season play. When Portland Adventist went to the Class 2A state tournament several years back, an attempt to accommodate the school created major chaos for everyone involved.

At least one court case still is pending, and that case could affect the Mountain Valley League.

But for now, Rogue Valley Adventist will play league games next winter, which should suit the Raid Tail Hawks’ fans fine. For the record, the school’s colors are maroon, purple and white.

Coaching change

Just when it appeared The Evergreen State College loomed as a potential threat in the Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s basketball race, the Geoducks again will start over.

Tom Kenna, who had a 21-39 record over the last two seasons, has resigned his position. The Geoducks led all NAIA Division II men’s basketball teams in defense last year, allowing just 59.1 points a game.

Kenna reportedly wants to seeking other opportunities in coaching.

Evergreen State athletic director Dave Weber said he had no timetable to replace Kenna.

" There have been many outstanding wrestlers form K.U. Dutch Simons got the program going & won state championships many years. I have the honor of being the first ever State Champ from K.U. That was only because of my 98 pound wt class. Bob Shirley, The Mosby brothers,Melvin Brown along with John Witte & others were on that 1st State Championship "

" Long live Matt Miles! He was the "Billy Kilmer" of Semi Pro Football: tough, gritty, fiery leader, winning mentality. I will never forget this "young gunslinger", he made this league better for being in it.
