Veteran star hopes for seventh finals bid

Six times a participant in the National Finals Rodeo, Brad Goodrich would like to make one more appearance at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

The 39-year-old from Hermiston took a step toward that goal with a near-record effort in Friday's tie-down roping at the 13th annual Great Northwest Pro Rodeo.

“Did I do all right?” Goodrich asked with a grin after he took the lead of the tie-down roping going into the final show of this year's tournament at 7 p.m. today with an effort of 8.0 seconds.

Goodrich holds the Klamath County Fairgrounds John Hancock Event Center record in the event at 7.8 seconds, a time he recorded when he won the GNWPR event in 2001.

Friday's win allowed Goodrich to join Bobby Mote, who competes tonight, as the only three-time winners in a single event at the Klamath Falls rodeo.

“Two of the top three times, that's OK,” Goodrich said.

“I've been fortunate here, but I don't come every year. I come when it fits into my travel plans, but it's a good stop. You like to go where you feel like you have some success.”

Goodrich also won the tie-down roping in 1999 when the GNWPR still was an outside event.

“This is a good run, with Redding and Klamath Falls,” Goodrich said. He will continue his weekend in British Columbia, something many of the more than 250 entries in this year's GNWPR also will do.

While Goodrich came close to his own event record, Jake Halverson of Friona, Texas, tied the rodeo record for most points in bareback riding when he scored an 86 on Apple Pie.

Halverson equaled the mark of Shawn Winters when he won the 2002 GNWPR bareback riding competition.

Mote will attempt to better Halverson tonight and will draw Air Mail, a horse Steven Anding of Crossroads, Texas, had Friday. Anding scored 78 points and stands tied for third in this year's rodeo.

Mote currently is No. 1 in the world standings in the event.

Among the leaders in steer wrestling is Shawn Greenfield of Lakeview, who would have taken a huge lead in his event had he not been penalized for breaking too soon.

The 10-second penalty left Greenfield with a time of 14.7 seconds, with no chance to earn a check from the GNWPR. Former champion Linn Churchill of Valentine, Neb., failed to score and continued a streak of misfortune by past champions.

Greenfield, however, remains among the world leaders and can add to his winnings over the rest of the weekend.

“I had a good winter and won a pair of big rodeos (in Fort Worth and San Antonio, Texas),” Greenfield said. “I'm riding a good horse and have been with a good crew.”

Friday's performance continued what he called a little rut, but he sees better days ahead.

“I'm looking forward to the summer season,” Greenfield said, “when you get to run a steer everyday. That way, you can stay more consistent.”

The fact that the steers used at the GNPR this year are first-year animals, some being in rodeo competition for the first time, made knowing the animals more of a challenge for the steer wrestlers.

Casey Minten of Witter Springs, Calif., and Jordan Luenella of Shoreline, Wash., each had a 6.2-second effort Friday and tied Rhett Kennedy of Chowchilla, Calif., for the lead. Kennedy was timed in 6.2 seconds during Thursday's slack performance.

Among the other leaders, Dusty Otley, a Paisley High School graduate who now lives in Adel, took the lead in saddle bronc riding with an 82 on Wild Thing.

In team roping, C.J. Crume of Grants Pass and Tucker Lind of Yamhill took the team roping team at 6.6 seconds. Crume recently competed in the Oregon High School Rodeo Association finals, also at the Hancock Event Center.

" There have been many outstanding wrestlers form K.U. Dutch Simons got the program going & won state championships many years. I have the honor of being the first ever State Champ from K.U. That was only because of my 98 pound wt class. Bob Shirley, The Mosby brothers,Melvin Brown along with John Witte & others were on that 1st State Championship "

" Long live Matt Miles! He was the "Billy Kilmer" of Semi Pro Football: tough, gritty, fiery leader, winning mentality. I will never forget this "young gunslinger", he made this league better for being in it.
