The sun shined brightly.
The wind was almost non-existent.
The scores fell dramatically.
After a week of varsity golf in less than ideal conditions, Ashland used Monday's near-perfect weather to all but clinch a berth to the Class 5A state championships.
Austin Harfst finished with a 36-35-71 to claim medalist honors at par.
Klamath Union's Carter Mast was a stroke back, and Mazama's Chandler Mulkey was third with a 74 in play at Harbor Links Golf Course.
“(The weather) allows you to concentrate on your shot,” Mulkey said. “You don't have to factor in the wind and the cold. You could hit a shot and not worry about (the weather).”
Mulkey was one of four Mazama players to break 90 in Monday's play as the Vikings finished second behind Ashland, and slipped past Eagle Point, 332-333.
Ashland won with a 305.
“We've beaten them two times now,” Mulkey said of Mazama's battle with Eagle Point, which should determine the Southern Sky Conference's second team to the state meet.
“We have a chance, especially if we get one of our players back (who missed Monday's play because of eligibility issues,” Mulkey said.
New Oregon School Activities Association rules will send two teams plus the three lowest individual scores of players not on the two squads that qualify for the state tournament May 14-15 in Corvallis.
Mulkey, who played in the Class 3A state tournament a year ago, and Mast both have an excellent chance to be one of the three individuals if their teams fail to qualify for state.
KU is highly unlikely. With no seniors on the team, the Pelicans are just working at improving their game.
“I was better today,” Mast said after his 1-over par round at Harbor Links.
Mast and Mulkey both had a 38 on the front nine, and were four strokes behind Ashland's Ben Wright. Harfst had a 35. Mast's 34 was the low score on the back nine. Mulkey and Harfst also broke 40.
“I started off pretty good and didn't make any big mistakes,” Mulkey said of his round. “When I did make a mistake, I recovered.”
Less pressure
Knowing that he does not have to be among the top five individuals at the district tournament at the Eagle Point Golf Course May 7-8 to qualify for state should make qualifying less stressful.
“You don't have to put more pressure on yourself,” Mulkey, who tied for fourth in the Skyline Conference a year ago, said, adding he would like to see his teammates join him at the state meet.
“I just have to try and stick to my game and have faith that my teammates will come through,” he said.
With sophomore Mark Herzfeldt-Kamprath improving rapidly, he had an 84 Monday, and with Derrick Fuller and Stuart Nelson both breaking 90, the Vikings are beginning to position themselves for a possible state berth.
Mazama has not yet had a boys golf team qualify for state, either in the Southern Oregon or Skyline conferences.
