Elite 2A sprinters will finally face each other

Track and field fans are beginning to settle into a groove.

Weekends filled with big meets are in full swing, and this week's competition begins with today's Chiloquin Invitational featuring some of the top small-school athletes in the area.

Many of those same individuals will head to Yreka for the annual Lions Invitational Saturday, while one of Southern Oregon's premier events also will take place Saturday at the annual Crater Classic.

With more meets, the chances of improving times gets better.

Partly sunny skies and cool temperatures are expected to greet athletes and fans for all three meets.

Of interest in the Chiloquin meet will be the potential battle between the host school's Dani Case and Lakeview standout Keli Hall.

Tuesday at Lakeview, Case was scheduled to run the 400-meter dash against Hall, who owns the state's best Class 2A time in the event in 59.04 seconds.

Hall was ill and the race did not materialize.

Today, the two are supposed to run the 300 hurdles, where Case has the third best Class 2A time, 49.54.

Each girl was supposed to have run her specialty at home and enter a new event on an alien track.

While the small schools meet in Chiloquin and Yreka, the area's larger schools will be at Crater, and the boys 3,000 could feature some of the state's Class 5A runners.

Crater's Jake Keyser (8:51.85) and Ryan Santana (8:55.43) own the state's top two times, while Klamath Union's Chris Reed is fourth (8:58.65) and Crater's Josh Elliott fifth (9:03.91).

Elliott Jantzer of Phoenix leads the state's Class 4A runners with an 8:54.39.
