Modoc school to stay open

Wednesday, April 18, 2007 11:50 PM PDT
April 19, 2007

ALTURAS - Residents of the small New Pine Creek community gave the Modoc United School District board a check for $1,137 in an effort to stop plans to downsize their kindergarten through eighth-grade school.

The board on Monday proposed eliminating one teacher and the school's sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grades to fix budgetary woes facing State Line School. The remaining teacher would be responsible for grades K-5. The school has 22 students.

New Pine Creek residents were outraged at the suggestion.

The $1,137 check given to the board at a Tuesday night meeting in Alturas covers the projected budget deficit for the 2007-08 school year.

“This check is to cover the amount of your projected deficit,” said Patti Carpenter, a State Line School teacher. “It is from some people in New Pine Creek who don't have children in our school. They realize the importance of having a school in our town and want to show their support - anonymously.”

Budget challenges

The board, facing budgetary challenges, voted unanimously Tuesday to keep the school open and not downsize it for at least another year. If sixth, seventh and eighth grades are eliminated from the school, those students would choose to be bused two hours to Alturas schools, attend Lakeview schools or be homeschooled.

New Pine Creek residents worry that smaller children riding two hours on a bus may be too tired to perform well in class.

State Line School's annual operating budget is estimated at $212,405. It is among three schools in Modoc County funded by the district through a state program called Necessary Small School Funding. The other schools are Arlington Elementary in Canby, Calif., and South Fork Elementary in Likely.

Over budget

In 2005-06, the school was $48,000 over budget, but the other two schools were under budget, resulting in an overall positive cash flow of $15,000. This school year, the three schools' are estimated to be $13,000 over budget.

Community members encouraged the board to seek grants and other sources of funding to help the small schools.
