Sunshine helps many athletes put up marks near, or at, the best that 2007 has seen

BONANZA - Small-school athletes continued to turn in some of the best efforts of the year at the Class 2A and 1A levels in Oregon.

A few Californians made their presence known Friday at the annual Bonanaza Twilight Invitational track and field meet on one of the nicest days in recent memory for this event.

“We've got some marks now and I'm happy with what we've done,” Paisley coach Jon Jones said. His team made its debut at the meet.

Everyone else was back on the track under sunny skies that kept the afternoon warm until the sun went down. Usually, at this meet, the wind howls, rain falls and, when it snows, the moisture comes down sideways.

Not Friday.

Marks as good as the weather.

Lakeview's Keli Hall, in her first 200-meter race, won in 26.56 seconds. Only Oakridge's Orie Gamez has run faster among Class 2A girls this season with a best of 26.54.

Lakeview's Ashley Baldovino, in her first 800, clocked a winning time of 2:23.84, easily the best this season at the Class 2A level.

Not all of the standouts in the meet met previous bests.

Chiloquin's Ruby Davis was, at times, frustrated with her efforts. She won the girls discus, but her best throw, one of more than 115 feet, was a scratch.

Bonanza's Kyle Gomez was nowhere near his state bests.

Still, Gomez and his teammates finished second in the team competition, and did so without the services of John Laidet, who missed the meet because of a pulled

hamstring.

Medford St. Mary's won the boys meet with 123 points, and was followed by Bonanza's 111. Big Valley and Lakeview finished third and fourth.

St. Mary's also won the girls meet, and scored 104 points. Bonanza followed with 88, with Lost River and Lakeview third and fourth in the 14-school meet.

Of the many anticipated duals, many expected the boys high jump to be a standout event.

Bonanza's Stephen Dickinson won at 6-2, a height also matched by Big Valley's Talor Fulfer.

“When I came here, I knew there were three or four guys who had gone six feet, and I knew the Bonanza guy (Dickinson) had gone 6-6,” Fulfer said.

“I was hoping he would push me to go 6-4. I was hoping the competition would do that,” Fulfer, a senior, said.

Dickinson, a sophomore, said: “On my first few jumps, I didn't have my steps down. I was lucky to clear 5-8. I was happy with 6-2.” His best jump a year ago was 5-10.

Dickinson won the 300 intermediate hurdles and was second to teammate Andy Davis in the 110 high hurdles. He also was second in the pole vault.

Fulfer, meanwhile, won the long jump and triple jump, getting his winning long jump of 19-10, about a half-foot under he season best, on his first jump.

Triad's Rachael Estabrook won the girls 3,000 in 11:47.00, easily the best Class 1A time in the state this season, while Lost River's Macayla Claver was timed in 12:02.00.

In the boys 100, Tulelake's Rey Chavolla won in 11.03, but barely beat Butte Valley's Ville Rauhala, who was timed in 11.06. They now are the top two times among all sprinters in the North Section this season.

" There have been many outstanding wrestlers form K.U. Dutch Simons got the program going & won state championships many years. I have the honor of being the first ever State Champ from K.U.
