Hornets' teams win own meet

Wednesday, April 11, 2007 12:32 AM PDT
April 11, 2007

Rachael Estabrook and Caleb Howard slowed, slightly, Henley's track and field team Tuesday.

Estabrook won the girls 3,000-meter run, one of three events not won by Henley's juggernaut. Lakeview's Keli Hall won the 400 on a nice afternoon for track.

Howard, meanwhile, won twice for Lakeview in the boys meet, two of the five events not won by the host Honkers, with Lakeview's Seth Walker getting one of the other wins in the pole vault.

Henley won both team events.

“It was a really good meet,” Henley coach Ron Smith said. “We had a few more kids show up than we were expecting, but the people who were running the meet did a great job.

“Some of the times, for this time of the year, were pretty good. We've been running some late-season times,” the longtime Henley coach said.

The Hornets will need those times the next couple of weeks with Henley traveling to Roseburg Friday and Crater Saturday, April 21.

Estabrook, who had finished fourth in the 1,500, came back with a strong race in the longest event of the day. Only four girls ran the 3,000.

“I was hoping there'd be more girls in the race,” Estabrook said. “With so few girls, there's no one to pace you, so I ran with some of the boys.”

All 3,000 runners ran in a single race.

Estabrook, who knew she was in a race with runners from bigger schools, said she was less concerned about where the others were from. She was more concerned with their times.

She won the girls portion of the race easily.

In the girls meet, Henley's Jessica Mortenson won the long jump and triple, while her teammate, Ellie Lesueur, won the shot put and discus. They were the only multiple winners Tuesday.

Howard, who set Lakeview's 800-meter school record Saturday, had a solid day and won the boys 1,500 and 800, placed fourth in the 200 and anchored the 4x400 relay team.

“It was a tough day, especially with the 800 and 1,500,” Howard said. “I ran the 200 for the heck of it. It was a pretty good day. I had a (personal best) in the 1,500, which is a race I haven't run much. I was happy.”

Howard was one of three boys to win multiple events.

Henley's Derek Woodland won the long jump, triple jump and 110-meter high hurdles, while Jordan Fenters swept the shot put and discus.

Henley had three 1-2-3 finishes in the boys meet, while the Hornets went 1-2-3 in four different girls events.

Several Henley athletes had solid times that were not recorded because only three individuals in each event can score in a meet with five schools.

Lakeview and Triad also return to action Friday and will compete at the annual Bonanza Twilight meet.

KU sweeps Eagle Point

Klamath Union's boys and girls teams swept Eagle Point in the Pelicans' first home Southern Sky Conference track and field dual meet Tuesday at Modoc Field.

The KU boys shined as a team in the field events.

Sirgeo Jefferson and Aaron Foster each had leaps of 40 feet or longer to finish 1-2 in the triple jump, while Nick Brandt, Matt Olvera and Sam Moore earned all nine points in the shot put.

On the girls side, Katey Choukalos won the 100-meter dash, as well as the long and high jumps. Then, she ran the opening leg of the winning 4x100 relay team that included Katie Gilbert, Sara Amos and Ellie Pohl.

Pohl also had an impressive victory in the 800, winning her debut in the event by nearly six seconds.
