Conditions were less than ideal.
Still, the eight Klamath Basin high schools that have teams made history Monday at Reames Golf and Country Club, all meeting in the same tournament.
Led by a brilliant round by Henley's Tommy Bacchi, Henley won the team title in a uniquely scored competition.
“It was really tough to get going. It was cold and the wind was gusting,” Hosanna Christian senior John Shaw said. “Even being familiar with the course (as a Reames member), it was still really tough.”
Bacchi turned in a 40-39-79 performance to win individual medalist honors by two strokes over teammate Russel Moates. Moates finished at 39-42-81.
“It wasn't too bad for the wind,” Bacchi said. “I tried to keep the ball low, out of the wind. Then I could score with my ups and downs with the short game.”
It was a rare medalist-honor effort by Bacchi.
Playing 18 holes is nothing new for golfers from Henley, Mazama and Klamath Union.
For the others, Monday's competition was a rare chance to play a full round of competitive high school golf, or for a few players to actually get time on the course.
“There was a little more nervousness knowing that you would be playing a little more competitive golf,” Shaw said.
“Last year, we probably only played two or three (full rounds) before district.”
For Chiloquin senior Kelsey Grossman, Monday's match was more than the chance to play 18 holes.
“It was really cool that we can hang with some of the good kids (from the larger schools),” Grossman said, “but it was really neat to have a team.
“Before, we've only had two or three players. Now, we have six or seven guys playing.”
With the unique scoring used Monday, Chiloquin was in a five-team battle for third place.
Henley won with an even par 144 in the meet in which each teams two best scores per hole were used to determine the team champion. Mazama had a 156.
Modoc and KU followed, each with a 174, while Hosanna Christian had a 178, Chiloquin a 179 and Lakeview a 184.
“This gave us a chance to get some kids some course time,” Modoc coach Harold Montague said. Modoc is on spring break this week, so not all of the team's regular players participated Monday.
One of the regulars who did was Jeff Solomon. His 45-41-86 was fifth overall. Henley's Curtis Zielstra had an 82, and Mazama's Derrick Fuller an 83.
“It was a good challenge and showed us what it was like to play with the big (schools),” Grossman said. “It was a good experience. They know the rules, but have fun playing.”
Grossman, who finished with a 100, played his round with clubs he was given by Bacchi. “Our dads work together and I appreciate getting (the clubs),” he said.
