Baseball team continues its road journeys
March 20, 2007
Oregon Tech's baseball team will continue its road trip.
The Hustlin' Owls have become the road warriors of the Cascade Collegiate Conference and the NAIA Region I teams with two more trips.
OIT has twice postponed its home opener, and has done so again, a move that will allow its field at the Klamath County Youth Sports Complex to be completely ready for play.
That means the Owls will travel to Burnaby, British Columbia, this weekend for a series of games against the University of British Columbia.
Then, the Owls will head to Lewiston, Idaho, to meet Lewis-Clark State March 30-31, which means OIT will play its first 22 games away from home.
Once it returns home, however, OIT will stay in Klamath Falls, starting with a non-league doubleheader against Simpson University April 4.
OIT will complete its season with 19 straight home games.
Hogges wins 200
Oregon Tech track and field coach Ken Coffman had plenty of reason to smile this past weekend.
Jguwon Hogges won the 200-meter dash at the University of Oregon's preview meet, a competition that included a number of NCAA Division I schools along with smaller four-year schools from Oregon.
Hogges, who was a men's basketball redshirt, won the 200 in 22.28 seconds.
He also placed sixth overall in the men's 400. Hogges ran his heat of the 400 in the eighth lane and still clocked a brilliant 49.74. Both times are close to the NAIA's national pre-determined qualifying standards.
Also for OIT in the meet at Hayward Field, Kelsey Stoltz was fourth in the women's javelin with a throw of 141 feet, two inches, and Michelle Klaja was sixth in the event at 131-2.
Klaja's throw met the provisional standard for the national meet. Stoltz already has bettered the automatic qualifying mark, which is 131-6.
Amy Sticka was fifth in the women's high jump at 35-7.75, and bettered the automatic qualifying standard.
Track signings
Oregon Tech has signed another three track and field athletes to letters of intent for next year, including Andy Davis of Bonanza. He will join high school teammate Kyle Gomez at OIT.
Coffman also has signed Statia Smith of South Medford High School and Korey Humberston of Cottage Grove. Both are distance runners. Humberston also joins a teammate who previously had signed at Oregon Tech, Bryant Sentman.
Volleyball signings
Henley's Megan Christensen is one of three volleyball players to sign a letter of intent to play for Oregon Tech and new head coach Angela Stewart.
Beth Fuller of Riseburg and Stephanie Willet of North Bend also signed.
Christensen was Player of the Year in the Skyline Conference as well as a first-team All-State volleyball player. She intends to major in dental hygiene.
“I am very excited Megan chose to become part of our volleyball team,” Stewart said. “She has a lot of talent, is a good all-around player and will have a promising college career.”
Fuller is the younger sister of the Hustlin' Owls' Katie Fuller who was Roseburg's Most Valuable Player last season. Beth Fuller also will compete in track and field.
Willet comes to Oregon Tech from Eastern New Mexico University and Southwestern Oregon Community College. She won her league's defensive Player of the Week honors twice at ENMU.
Willet was the Far West League's Player of the Year.

" Long live Matt Miles! He was the "Billy Kilmer" of Semi Pro Football: tough, gritty, fiery leader, winning mentality. I will never forget this "young gunslinger", he made this league better for being in it.
