SALEM - Lakeview entered this weekend's OSAA/U.S. Bank/Les Schwab Tires Class 2A/1A wrestling championships having had two individual champions in the history of the program.
Justin Ferry and Andrew Hennings doubled that tally Saturday night.
Ferry became the second member of his family in as many years to earn a state championship with a technical fall victory at 130 pounds, then Hennings followed with a decision at 215 to propel the Honkers to a third-place finish in the team standings.
“It's really good,” Ferry said. “It's the best we've ever done at state, and we have two championships.”
With a 20-4 victory over Culver's Jeremy Thompson, Ferry followed in the footsteps of his brother, Ryle, who earned a title last year.
“It means a lot. It shows we're pretty tough,” Ferry said. “We've worked hard at it and everything.”
Ferry earned a No. 3 seed after a loss to the top-seeded Thompson at districts, but he set the tone early, earning the first takedown of the match and getting back points immediately afterward.
“I lost to the kid earlier once, at districts,” Ferry said, “and I just needed to have the momentum go my way and wrestle my match.”
Hennings didn't enter state with the pedigree or experience of Ferry, but he was impressive throughout the weekend. He capped the tournament with an 11-5 win over Dusty McCord of Monroe.
“He's only been wrestling for three years, so getting a state championship is really good,” Ferry said of Hennings. “He's really excited.”
Pair makes history
One of the tournament's smallest competitors, as well as one of the biggest, became the first in school history to take home a state title.
North Lake freshman Avery Overton earned the 112 championship, and Chiloquin heavyweight Washi Collins earned a first-round pin in his title match.
“I kind of got nervous a little bit, thinking about what I was going to do,” Collins said. “(But) right before the match started, I was just ready to wrestle.”

" Long live Matt Miles! He was the "Billy Kilmer" of Semi Pro Football: tough, gritty, fiery leader, winning mentality. I will never forget this "young gunslinger", he made this league better for being in it.
