CHILOQUIN - Chiloquin showcased its versatility in a 61-50 win over the Lakeview Honkers Friday night at Big Gym to take home the Southern Cascade League girls tournament championship.
Chiloquin has the 2006 SCL player of the year in senior Tiffany Rich, who is generally the main defensive focus for opponents. Chiloquin coach Donald Spoon told his team that other players are going to need to step up when Rich gets now-expected double teams.
“I know most nights I am going to be doubled,” Rich said. “It is a key for us that we have other players step up.”
Against the Honkers, it was junior guard Dani Case who stepped up and gave the Queens the effort they would need.
Case was all over the court on both offense and defense. She led the Queens with 23 points, grabbed six rebounds and picked up five steals.
“I've been telling Dani all season that she was going to have to step up and have a game like this,” Spoon said. “It was only a matter of time before it happened. She is probably our best outside shooter and I knew she would step up.”
Case also made the basket that was the turning point for the Queens. Chiloquin, the regular season SCL champions with a perfect 10-0 record, was down 14-9 with just three seconds left in the first quarter. The Queens inbounded the ball and Case fired a half-court shot that sailed through the basket, cutting the lead to 14- 12.
“It was great to hit that shot,” Case said. “It got the crowd fired up and gave us a little momentum.”
Spoon said the shot was no fluke.
“We have been practicing the half court shots in practice,” he said. “The players always tell me, ‘When are we ever going to have to shoot one of those in a game?' I told Dani after she hit the shot, ‘There was a reason we practice them.' ”
Lakeview's Hall big in loss
In the second quarter the Queens showcased their athleticism, running up and down the floor and getting in the passing lanes, ultimately outscoring the Honkers 21-4. The only Lakeview player who was able to get any offense going was Keli Hall. Hall led Lakeview with 23 points and got the open looks normally reserved for Kelsie Flynn.
The Queens used a diamond-one defense, in which one defender was playing man-to-man on Flynn and the other four were in a zone.
“She is their best shooter,” Spoon said. “We had Lorena Ochoa play man on her and she did a great job.”
Although Case was the catalyst for the Queens offense, Rich did her part on offense and defense. She scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, Tempest Dawson and Shawn Walker also gave the Queens solid efforts with nine and seven points, respectively.
Hall led the Honkers with 23 points followed by Flynn and Weibelhaus with nine each.
Happy coach
Spoon was pleased with the effort from the Queens.
“This is the kind of game we are going to have to play to do well at state,” he said. “Tiffany is such a great player and she had a good night. But if we are going to go deep at state, we are going to have to be able to have other players who can contribute. With the way Dani, Shawn, Tempest and Lorena played, I am really excited to get back on the court and play.”
Chiloquin will find out who they play today and when they will play on Tuesday.
Lost River 59, Cascade Christian 46
MERRILL - Courtney Rieger had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and host Lost River earned the SCL's No. 3 seed for the Class 2A tournament with a victory over Cascade Christian.
Bailey Johnson added 15 points for the Raiders (15-9), who will open at either Oakridge or Central Linn. Kayla Swingle had nine points and six assists, and Kim Rajnus chipped in with five blocked shots.
Brittany Hallmark scored 12 points to lead the Challengers, who finish their season 9-17.

" Long live Matt Miles! He was the "Billy Kilmer" of Semi Pro Football: tough, gritty, fiery leader, winning mentality. I will never forget this "young gunslinger", he made this league better for being in it.
