Police: Suspect posed as teen
January 23, 2007
A Klamath Falls man accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl had set up a separate MySpace.com account under the name, “I-A-G,” posing as a teen boy in a ploy to meet underage girls.
Investigators say no other girls have disclosed being sexually abused by Joseph Polk.
The 36-year-old was arrested and charged with having sex with the girl he met on MySpace.com. He posed as a 15-year-old football player under the user name “Boomalicious,” when he contacted the girl through the Web site and they met in person several weeks after.
Meeting planned
Polk is also a former religion teacher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Officials there asked Polk to resign his volunteer position, and will have a meeting at 7 p.m. tonight to address the concerns of parents.
The lead investigator on Polk's case, Detective Dennis Yaws of the Oregon State Police, will speak at the public meeting in the church's parish hall. The detective will speak on keeping youth safe against predators and about the Internet.
Father Rogatian Urassa of Sacred Heart said they've talked with all children under Polk's supervision, and their parents, to ensure there wasn't any abuse, Urassa said.
“There is nothing attached to our church yet,” Urassa said.
Multiple accounts
Investigators discovered that Polk set up multiple accounts on MySpace.com, a site that allows users to create Web pages and chat with others. Under the name “I-A-G,” Polk posted a photo of an unidentified teenage boy in a snowboarding jacket, said Detective Yaws, though he couldn't explain what the name means.
Yaws said he is continuing to investigate Polk, although no additional girls who may have had contact with Polk have disclosed sexual abuse.
Investigators say Polk met a victim twice for sex after they exchanged messages and e-mails. Sometime in November or December of last year, Polk reportedly picked her up in his vehicle; she noticed he was older but still had sex with him. There was also a second encounter.
Polk faces multiple sex charges after the girl told a counselor and investigators of the incidents. He is being held in the Klamath County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Anyone with questions about tonight's meeting can call the parish office (541) 884-4566.
