LaGRANDE - Eastern Oregon University remained unbeaten at home this season with an 87-72 victory over Oregon Tech in a Cascade Collegiate Conference battle of highly rated teams.

The Mountainers held off every OIT comeback bid Friday on the way to dropping the Hustlin' Owls into a tie for second place in the league with Albertson.

OIT is at Albertson today.

In Friday's first game, Oregon Tech battled from behind in the second half and overtime to stun Eastern Oregon, 71-68, in the women's game in a battle of teams that entered the evening tied for second place in the league.

Albertson leads the women's standings at 8-2, with OIT and Corban both 6-2.

In Friday's men's game, Eastern Oregon, which entered the game ranked 25th in the most recent NAIA Division II men's basketball poll, never trailed.

Five minutes into the game, the Mountaineers held an 18-4 lead.

“(Eastern) moved the ball very well on us and, when we had to go to a man-to-man defense, they were a little bit bigger and stronger inside against us,” OIT coach Danny Miles said.

“This is a rough road trip and we'll have to play a little strong (tonight at Albertson),” the veteran coach said. “We have to regroup.”

The Mountaineers had scored six straight points, two to tie the game at the end of regulation play, and the first four in overtime to take EOU's biggest lead of the second half or extra session.

The Owls then scored six straight points, capped by Crystal Trout's putback, and then teams then battled back-and-forth to the end.

“This was a good win for us,” OIT coach Tom Loney said on his postgame radio show after the Owls upped their league record to 7-2 and dropped EOU to 6-3.

“All the girls had a chance to play, and they all did some good things for us,” Loney said after his 99th career victory.

“If we can shoot 40 percent, I don't think we can get beat,” he said, “because I like our defense and, again, we took care of the basketball.”
