Two injured in hit-and-run

Valencia-Lopez

A Klamath Falls man reportedly drove drunk in the early morning hours of New Year's Day and injured two people when he hit their car and fled the scene.

Juan Francisco Valencia-Lopez, 31, faces felony hit and run and driving under the influence charges, and he is being held in the Klamath County Jail on $15,000 bail.

Valencia-Lopez is accused of injuring the other driver, Marc Kane, 58, and his passenger, Tyana Payne, 60, both of Klamath Falls.

Those two and an additional passenger, Marie Owens, 80, who was examined for the possibility of injuries, were treated and released at Merle West Medical Center.

The crash occurred just after 12:30 a.m., Monday. Authorities say Valencia-Lopez was driving his Mercury Cougar the wrong direction on South 11th Street at a high rate of speed.

GMC broadsided

He broadsided a GMC van carrying the victims at the intersection with Klamath Avenue, and continued driving, barreling into a power pole and a parked Honda Accord, said Lt. Mark Carlson of the Klamath Falls Police Department.

The van, parked Honda and power pole were badly damaged, Carlson said. After he reportedly hit the Honda, he left his car, fleeing on foot.

Police found and apprehended him at Klamath Avenue and Commercial Street when he stumbled to the ground, Carlson said.

Klamath County District Attorney Ed Caleb said he plans to file additional charges of assault against Valencia-Lopez for reportedly causing the injury of the two people.

" I am Ted Otterbein's oldest grandchild. He gave his entire life to this team along with my grandmother, Dottie. My fondest memories with my grandparents were spending summers each year going traveling with them to the games. I hope you guys are able to resolve whatever pending issues stand at bay. When my grandparents retired, they often spent monies out of their own pocket to help ensure this team and these players could continue being successful. As a matter of fact, I believe my great grandfather, Paul Otterbein, founded the Ameican Legion 40 years ago in Klamath. Tina (Denver CO). "
