Phoenix edges Henley girls

The young Henley girls soccer team is growing up in a hurry.
After starting Skyline Conference play with an 0-2 record, the Hornets beat Mazama Saturday before playing their best game of the season to date against the Phoenix Pirates (current No. 6 rated 3A team in the state) Tuesday, losing 1-0 in a game that was decided in penalty kicks (3-2 Phoenix advantage).
"Our youth showed in pk's, but other than our fitness level which is my fault, we are in a good place."
The main story for the Hornets was the amazing job the defense did, holding the top offensive team in the Skyline scoreless through regulation and two overtimes (100 minutes) to force penalty kicks.
"Considering in the Jamboree tournament we gave up eight goals in 120 minutes - to then hold these guys three weeks later is profound," Blevins said. "This was a big step for the defense and midfield."
What is significant about this development is the fact that aside from the spectacular play from senior goal keeper Chelsea Hornbeck, a defense consisting of three juniors (Janelle Bailey, Lauren Vance, Jessica Mortensen) and a freshman (Elizabeth Webb) kept two of the Skyline's most prolific scorers (Marci Klimek, Carlee Storey) off the scoreboard.
Mortensen was particularly impressive, especially on a play early in the second half when Klimek stole a loose ball from Hornbeck and kicked a would be goal into an empty net. Except Mortensen was there to clear the ball away from the goal line.
As earlier stated, Hornbeck was stellar in net, coming up with key save after key save en route to 14 in the game.
Offensively, the Hornets had a couple nice opportunities, mainly on Ashley Evans breakaways, but for the most part had a difficult time getting behind Phoenix junior Tamara Heryford, a first-team all Skyline performer as well as second-team all-state.
"We pressed well, but couldn't get any of the better opportunities to go," Blevins said. "Fitness was an issue there which is my bad."
But scoring couldn't be contained forever, and the penalty shootout was filled with excitement.
Henley shot first, and Mortensen came through by drilling her shot into the left corner. Phoenix goalie Alex Hanscom followed, but lifted her shot over the goal to give Henley a 1-0 advantage in the best of five shootout.
Evans was up next, but her shot was blocked by Hanscom, while Heryford followed with a well-placed shot into the right corner, tying the series at 1-1.
Hornet Lisel Frazier had her kick stopped before Klimek put a ball under Hornbeck's glove to give Phoenix a 2-1 advantage.
Next, Hornbeck stepped up and tied it up at 2-2 by drilling a ball in the left side of the goal.
However, Pirate Megan Burr put one in the left side to put Phoenix ahead again, 3-2.
The Hornets had one last shot, but Brianna Otero had her shot blocked off the post to end the game with the Pirates the victors.
Regardless of the final result, this game did wonders for the confidence of a young Henley team.
"After losing nine seniors from last year, it's going to help us," Blevins said. "I think they know they can go toe-to-toe with anybody now. The ladies did a great job and I'm very proud of them."
