Chopper crash injures 3

Published July 27, 2004

A helicopter working a wildfire on and near the Lassen National Forest crashed Monday, injuring its pilot and two observers.

On a reconnaissance flight, the privately owned helicopter went down near Bieber while flying over the northwest section of the 3,200-acre Straylor Fire, according to the California Department of Forestry.

The three suffered minor to major injuries, fire officials said. They were airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. Their names have not been released.

Details of the cause of the crash are not available yet, officials said. A department of forestry accident investigation team has been dispatched to the scene.

A dozen helicopters were working the Straylor Fire today, dropping water, shuttling crews and equipment and flying reconnaissance missions, officials said. The helicopter that crashed was on contract with the State of California.

The Straylor Fire has been burning since Thursday afternoon on the Lassen National Forest, private land and public land administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
