Public hearings on Cob plant set

People interested in commenting on the 1130-megawatt Cob Energy Facility proposed to be built near Bonanza will have a chance to attend a series of public hearings Thursday.
The Oregon Department of Energy is looking for feedback on its draft proposed order, which issued an initial thumbs-up for the power plant. The department is ultimately responsible for providing a recommendation to the Energy Facility Siting Council, which controls the state process for deciding whether large power projects are sited in Oregon.
The Bonneville Power Administration is also seeking feedback from agencies and the public. The company owns the power transmission lines the Cob Facility would need to hook up with to send power from its plant to its potential customers. BPA issued a draft environmental impact statement last November that examined the impact of denying the hookup or approving it, and plans to release a final EIS in March.
For people in or near Klamath Falls, public hearings will take place Thursday at the Klamath County Fairgrounds. The BPA's hearing is from 3 to 5 p.m., and the Department of Energy will hold its hearing at 7 p.m. in Exhibit Hall No. 2.
People who live near Bonanza, which is 30 miles east of Klamath Falls, can attend hearings Thursday at the Lorella Community Hall, 9787 E. Langell Valley Road. The BPA hearing in Lorella is from noon to 2 p.m. and the department hearing is afterwards at 2 p.m.
