Bureau could change water conditions description

Saturday, June 7, 2003 4:23 PM PDT
Published June 6, 2003

The wet weather of April and parts of May in the Klamath Basin will likely result in a change in the water year type as defined by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

The June 1 streamflow forecast by the Natural Resources Conservation Service could lead the Bureau to a change from "dry" to "below average" to characterize water conditions in the Upper Basin.

Such a change would mean different flow schedules downstream and different lake levels required for Upper Klamath Lake, and, possibly, different amounts for irrigation.

The forecast calls for 200,000 acre-feet of water to flow into Upper Klamath Lake from May through September, or 59 percent of average, using the Bureau's strict prediction requirements.

The Bureau should make its decision about the year type on Monday said Cecil Lesley, branch chief for land and water operations in the Bureau's Klamath Basin Area Office.
