Better water available

Wednesday, April 9, 2003 3:58 PM PDT
published April 9, 2003

I find it very interesting that the Klamath Reclamation Project is again being held liable for the salmon kill on the Klamath River. The water released down the Klamath River to "save" the fish was very warm and low in oxygen. Groups demanded the water be released to save salmon, yet this water was of poor quality.

But perfectly good water, that could have saved a lot of salmon, was not sent to the Klamath River, but was sent to California irrigators by a California judge.

The Trinity River is by nature a contributor to the Klamath River, providing the Klamath with cool, fresh water. The California judge who refused to send Trinity River water to save the salmon should be the one held liable for the salmon kill.

So it was the California irrigators and a California judge who were negligent in the salmon kill. But it's the Klamath Reclamation Project being blamed. What's next? We get blamed for a fish kill in Canada?

Editor's note: A story in Tuesday's Herald and News said that a California judge has decided on the amount of water to be released down the Trinity River this year. The matter is still in litigation and while the lawsuit continues, the judge makes the decision on a year-to-year basis on how much goes down the Trinity to the Klamath, and how much goes to central and southern California.
